what`s the different between UK and USA?

Recommended Posts

Most Americans have no idea of the world outside there own city or state.... With the exception of my good friend alot Americans also have no idea where Europe is or England (honest)

And as for  You never could have won the Revolutionary War with out the French army and navy (Or should I say Freedom army and navy).

I know where England is. I know where Europe is. Do you know where South Carolina is?

And... speaking of foreign help to win a war: The UK never could have won WWI or WWII without the aid of the US military. I know persons whose fathers and grandfathers died "over there" to secure your freedom.

Good point. Europe is full of small nations similar to our states and we are lambasted for not knowing each and every one. Our States are at times just about as different from each other as are the European nations.

I'm sure there are some valid points in all this but I don't have time to read every post so here's a response to what I've read...

Most everything is personal taste. Regarding architecture, I think the US has some absolutely gorgeous skylines (Chicago and San Fransisco come to mind) but the same can be said for London if that's the style you prefer.

When it comes to sports:

Baseball is global. US, Canada, Mexico, Carribean, Japan, South America, Australia, and yes even Europe (since they're competing in the olympics in this event)

Basketball is gobal. US, Canada, Mexico, South America, China, Europe

complaining that the US calls it soccer is pointless since we could just as easily say "Why do you call an elevator a lift?" Words come from all over, and as such they have to be accomodated for the society that they will be used in. There's no point in calling soccer "Football" in the US since we already have a Football. Yes, I know you barely use your feet but that's what it is called. Rather then have everybody all of a sudden start calling soccer...football, and come up with a new word for football it's easier to just let it be.

To those who complain about the politics and the US involvement in the world I won't say much but I will say this. As a "superpower" the US is looked upon by nations for support whether it's financially or militarily (is that a word?). The involvement in Iraq is not approved by 100% of the US but then again what is? The media chooses to show what it wants and yes people get arrested for protesting the war when they become a nuisance to others. Here in Chicago one of my friends was/is against this war and does all she can to tell others, she is proud of the fact that just when it was announced she was part of a large protest downtown that blocked up Lake Shore Drive. For those of you who haven't been to or know of Chicago's streets. Lake Shore Drive is the equivalent of a highway to and from downtown that is extremely vital for commuters. They may have had a good reason to protest, but I'm sure everyone that was late because of it will only remember getting chewed out by their boss or missing time with family, etc.

Whoo, finally the one main difference between the US and the UK is that the US has better transvestite hookers. Just ask Hugh Grant.

first I want to say that it is bull**** that you entered the war to help us. you stood outside it and watched until pearl harbour was attacked that you knew about two days before.. But thanks for the help ;)

Did you know 80% of all americans where for the war agains iraq.. only 20% can find iraq on a map. :p

Did you know that the avrage american can locat only 12 countrys on the map, whilst a englishman can locat 30. (I heard this one a long time ago and I cant remember the exact number but it was around there)..

I have spoken to americans who thought that there are two moons! On for each side of the earth. And several that thought that sweden was somewhere in england. I think you think of New Sweden in the states and assume that it comes from somewhere in england...

even the germans call it Fussball

the other thing is even though the US may have more people playing and their country getting better ranks. their clubs are unlikely to ever become that good because countries like the UK, France, Spain, Italy have clubs that have clubs with lots of history and money to afford world clss players. remember it not just how good your countries players are, but your clubs need to be good as well

First:

Soccer v. Football: The point is moot, anyway. Everybody knows that the two words mean the same thing, and it doesn't cause any confusion. So who gives a f**k what it's called? I mean, seriously? Whoopdeedoo! A few countries use a different word than the rest of the world! Oh, heaven forbid! What is this world coming to?

You don't see me getting up in arms from countries that call the letter Z 'Zed' do you? Of course not. Languages evolve, the grow, the develop different dialects. It's part of life. It's just plain silly.

Oh - and of course, you Brits would know that 'soccer' is a British english and NOT American english word anyway, yes? We don't call our teams clubs - we call them... well, teams. Want to get on us next for that, too? :p

Annnnnyway...

... I both agree, and disagree with this statement, actually. Our clubs -are- getting good, as well as the national teams. Are our clubs of a world class calibre yet? Well no, of course not. We have individual /players/ who are - but, of course, the ones who are tend to be playing for foreign leagues already.

Still - in the recent friendlies of the past few years (I've been searching in vain to try to find links, but since the last matches I remember were in early 03 and 02 I can't find them anylonger. :/) the US clubs (DC United and the NY/NJ Metrostars, IIRC,) have put on good showings against such teams as AC Milan and AC Roma. In the past few years more foreign teams have been making their way to US soil for friendlies, which is only a good thing - because it /does/ help to give our players the experience that they need. Soccer/football isn't a wildly popular sport (Yet! *optimism*) in this country, as everyone knows, so no, of course they can't afford world-class players and the like - that just means our teams are having to do it the hard way - through working their butts off at getting better and better - and increased international matches only helps that.

The US is arriving. We're just taking our sweet time in doing so. No big-money players, some of our best players going over to Europe (especially Germany,) to play... It's taking time, but it's happening.

Just as slowly, the game's been getting more popular here too - but it's happening. I remember a time DC United struggled to put a few thousand people in their stadium - now the DC United average is 15,000 people per game with a league average of 14,000 per. So, it's happening. Give it a few more years, and people might be surprised.

Think of it like this: I can name all 50 of the states in the US. I wonder if you can name just as many nations within the same distance range. It sounds like you are making a point, unless you put it in perspective.

Ok don't start quoting polls. Those have to be the most worthless things on the face off the earth. I'm sure I could walk outside right now and find out 100% of the people think its cold outside. (Its about 0 F) So I guess that means all Americans think its cold right now. I'm also sure that I could find someone in the UK that thinks there is more then one moon also. Any where that you go in the world you are likely to find people who don't care about something and therefore know nothing about it (ie Astronomy).

Drinking ages

USA - 21

UK - 18

nuff said, that makes the uk better than the usa.

Keep in mind that drinking ages are established by the states, not the federal govt.

I thought it was a 17 year old bar age with no drinking age. At least it used to be.

Hey now, I used to be on my Primary school's rounders team. Boys can play to, just not men. And I must say American Football is very wussy, your COMPLETELY covered from head to toe in padding. Real football (soccer) and rugby all you have is some shinguard.

There are actually 2 moons, but one is very small. I learned that from QI - a quiz show here in the uk

ok, cut that, its getting old, just because they use protection dont make then wussies, its a different sport with different style, period. personally I like American Football more than rugby, its more elegant to me, I used to play it but I hurted my spine, am I a wussy?

To much padding for me.

What is with all the padding in these games? I've never actually played American Football so I don't really understand how it's different then rugby in terms of requiring padding. How is American football anymore violent in terms of physical abuse then rugby? The same with hockey, I can understand the helmets what with getting bashed in the head with a stick but besides that I don't understand why you need a full body suit on. Hockey isn't all that much less violent then "soccer", only difference is when you get shoved you get shoved into a wall and not on the ground.

dont know, but the question is, why you need an explanation? the league cares about the players health, thats it, because, after-all is just a sport and is not necessary to people get hurt.

I didnt know that real-men expose their health just because they are real-men

So your saying the rugby associations of England or Austria and all over the world for that matter care none for the physically well-being of their players?

What does being a "real man" have to do with anything? I wasn't questioning anyone's manhood.

Haha thanks for the good laugh! American football players may wear helmets and pads, but they are much bigger and stronger than European football players. And it should be noted that hitting a baseball is often touted as one of the hardest things to do in all of sports. Don't be so igorant.

Im not implying anything about the rugby associations, Im just talking about the national footbal league, I couldnt care less about what the rugby league thinks and neither I can give you an opinion about it, so dont put words in my mouth.

oh, sorry, then what you tried to say with the word "wussy"?
