That being said, now that it's not mirrored anymore you devs & admins can finally move on to fixing more important bugs like status replies. :p Seriously though, it's broken & is still used very frequently. And If you are not planning on fixing it anytime soon, you should at least disable the ability reply & create new statuses until you plan on doing so. It's driving me nuts.

I'm truly sorry, but I'm getting tired of this. The last status was 18 hours ago, the one before that November 12th, then 11th, 9th and October 30th. That is not frequent compared to the forums, and it does not harm the forum compared to other things on the devs' todo list.

I suggest using Twitter or Facebook for status updates.

The replies to statuses are more frequent than the statuses themselves. I'm not saying there should be a rush to fix it, but I do think the functionality should be disabled until it is actually getting worked on. It's never a good idea to leave broken features visible to the public.

Easy now...while I agree that is not frequent in my book, suggesting members use other services is a great way to lose them altogether.

You're right, and I apologise. But the matter has been discussed already, and I'm tired of hearing about this "absolutely crucial, forum-breaking" addition that does not impact the forum in general compared to other bugs that are being ironed out. It verges on harassment of our developers.

You mean developer? None of the other devs said they would look into the issue. I think you should at least consider my suggestion. Sure it isn't fixing the problem, but it would stop the so called "harassment".  The reason I haven't moved off the particular bug is because I have more bugs I could report, but I honestly feel that since IPB4 became a thing, user reported bugs aren't taken seriously anymore.

@LimeMaster Look at the number of user reported bugs I've fixed in the past few days relating to news comments, and the fact articles are no longer mirrored to the forums. Quite clearly we are responding to user bugs. As I've said before, we're simply prioritising. There's a decent chance the bug in status replies will be fixed by Invision themselves anyway, so it makes more sense for the dev team to put out efforts into larger changes, like the one this thread is about, which will have a far better impact in terms of improvement to the site overall.

@Danielx64 Articles are in an entirely seperate database, and always have been. Comments while articles were not merged were in their own table, obviously while merged they were put into the forum's database, and some work will happen down the line to move those ones back to their own table. A lot of the problems we had were caused by them being in the same database, and will be solved by making them seperate.

Maybe I'm being a little too harsh, so I'm sorry. It's just that the bug impacts me & some other members more than it probably should.

However, I don't think Invision will fix it. It seems like you'll be on your own with that one.

I apologize for derailing this thread & will try stop myself from mentioning the bug again. You can delete my posts in this thread if you want.

Have a good day!

Perhaps one of the reasons it is not frequently used is because it's broken.  Funny how thing become a priority when it may impact rankings, which are understandably important regarding revenues.  Just my 2 cents worth.  No harassment intended, just a long time member sharing my opinion.  There is  no reason for any staff members to get upset, people are concerned and participating, better that than nobody caring or visiting Neowin.  IMHO

Also bear in mind that it does work for the majority of people, as evidenced by the fact that a lot of the statuses in the sidebar DO have replies, which clearly make reference to earlier replied - this wouldn't be possible if noone was able to see status replies. It's only a tiny subset of users that are actually experiencing the issue.

You can see there are replies, but you can't read them, at least none that I've tried to read, but my own responses.  No reason to minimize the situation, it exists and the number seems to be higher than just a "tiny subset".  There is a way to view the replies by checking the activity of the person replying, hardly an ideal way.

I understand it's not a priority, but there in no reason for staff members to get any kind of "circle the wagons attitude" towards members who are concerned. Again just my opinion.  Thanks for the opportunity to share it.

@DaveLegg

FYI, I really like the status and replies.  I hope you get it fixed sooner than much later.  That is a great feature for us.

I have noticed the padlock on status posts which you might have changed or forum upgrade screwed it up. Looks like permission issue.  If it is not, then the script or database might have been corrupted during the upgrade.

I don't want to switch the services back and forth, I mean Neowin, Twitter, etc.

If the status was up and running again, I can stay and use forum and status in one place.

Hope you understand and you are able to get it fixed.

Thanks.

Too bad you can't simply put the forum in place of the comments section, then you'd get the best of both worlds, as it stands now, it's just not working for me.

Could you be more specific? In what way is it not working?

Sorry, "it's just not working for me" was a nice way of saying I don't like it.

I really liked being taken to the post I last read, and the placement of the comments means you have to scroll past the article itself (once you've read it) and "related stories" and the "previous/next story box". The comments section just seems disorganized, I'm sure there will be tweaks in the future but right now it seems like a big step backwards.

Comments section is, erm, was disorganized thanks to the forum posts... I never understood why a quoted reply in the forum would make a new, top level comment on the news article comment section, when it should instead been placed into a reply section of the original comment they're replying to. So glad the forum mirroring was killed. It's not a step backwards, it's leapfrogging forward.

Would it be possible to add a 3rd shade to comments that would show up only on comments that are new compared to the last time we visited the actual post so we could easily track what has been added without reading all the posts again? Something like this...along with adding a rich editor like in forum.

Thanks for the additional details. That's stuff that we're aware of, and we have some plans that should resolve all of the issues you raised there.

Amongst those are the ability to choose a 'linear' view (similar to the way posts are organised on the forums, purely chronological), rather than the semi-threaded view that is currently in use (this will remain the default however).

We'll also be adding tracking of which comments are new since you last saw them, so new ones can be highlighted, and you'll be able to scroll to the first new comment directly.

Something very similar to that is in the pipeline. I can't confirm exactly how it will look yet, but there will be an easy visual indicator on new comments yes

I will respectfully disagree about which direction this step took and since I rarely, if ever visited the Front Page, I have no idea how the comments section worked. I only know what I see and it seems like a big blob of comments without a good way to read them.

I'm sure you will overcome the learning curve.   The front page mirroring was garbage and looked like crap because the formatting from the front page didn't work right for a forum post.

The big blob of comments you speak of was due to the fact that forum replies generated their own top level comment on the front-page and were disjointed and out of order with the rest of them. You're complaining about a mess your way created.

Well I just hit a problem: I wanted to quote 3 comments and guess what? I can't do that because I can't reply from the forum side of things. Could you please add the option so that we can quote more than once comment at once?

There's no easy way to make it forum like without screwing up neowin?

+1 the comment system, just doesn't feel comment friendly.

We're working on it, and multiple quotes is definitely on the to-do list. Bear with us, we want to be sure the updates we make are as bug-free as possible, so features will be added a few at a time, once we're sure they're ready.
