Nintendo's New Product Mystery

Recommended Posts

January 12, 2004 - In an interview with Japan's Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed a few new tidbits on his company's upcoming mystery product that has had the game industry buzzing since its announcement last year.

Regarding the new product, Iwata says "We'll announce the new product in America in May. We use the phrase 'A product of a different nature' to describe the product, but the idea that anyone who plays it will find it interesting remains unchanged." He finishes off with, "It should be a hint to the next generation of hardware. This will be the year that we put up a serious fight with this new product."

And yet, no solid details on what we can expect. Given all the hype, whatever Nintendo shows at E3 it had better be darn impressive.

We'll have more as we learn it.

I know this was reported recently, but I wasn't sure if that included the tidbits from Iwata himself. At any rate this thing must really be big if it's paving the way for future generational hardware. Come to think of it Nintendo has been pioneering controllers from day one. This could be big, and I'm glad Nintendo is understanding that it does have a serious fight on its hands.

Come on 64DD ...

seriously, I have no idea what they're cooking up. They did good with the GBA SP, but what they could add to the Cube/GBA to make a significant difference ... I have no idea.

UPDATE: The New, New Nintendo System in 2004

The Japanese newspaper, Mainichi Daily News, is reporting that Nintendo is planning on launching a new console system by years end 2004. The console will not be a successor to the GameCube or the GameBoy Advance but a new product that will coexist with the successor to the GameCube and GameBoy Advance. Mainichi also reports that it will be able to communicate data wirelessly via radio.

This past July, Nintendo registered and copyrighted a device titled Connectevision. It was believed to be the IQue renamed for international audiences, but with the revelation of wireless data transfer (something the IQue does not support) it appears be something different.

Could this be Nintendo's "new and innovative" product they plan on exposing at E3 2004? It looks that way. Nintendojo will have more as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Nintendo has confirmed to Famitsu magazine that they will unveil this new video game system at this years E3 trade show in May. They further confirmed that it is not a successor to the GameCube or the GameBoy Advance. Another interested tidbit is that it will indeed play back existing game titles. Is it the iQue player modified for the markets other than China? Is it a portable GameCube, or something totally different? Looks like we all will find out in a few months. Nintendojo will keep you in the know regarding this exciting turn of events

Nintendojo.

That idea is what the PSP (Playstation Portable) is going to be like.
