Browsing Windows Networks on OS X

Recommended Posts

From what I remember when I used Jaguar you went to GO>Connect to server, and then you could browse all available servers on the network. That is not working for me on panther. I seem to have to type smb://pcname/sharename which isnt working either. Any idears.

If your windows network is an Active Directory domain, you can get your administrator to add your computer to the network through /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access or just trying clicking on the finder in the dock and browsing to the Network.

The latter works fine for me at work.

Ehhh Windows has its qualities as does the Mac. What I'm really worried about is more and more people resorting to Linux.

Almost any non M$ OS is a good OS :p

First off eat me......

I am a Network Administrator for an eCommerce company that has a *Nix/Windows/and Apple enviornment. I use that term because its funny, not becuase it reflects my opinion on MS whatsoever. I personally like MS products. The thing that gets me is you 2 didn't even make an attempt to answer the question that was at hand. You just spammed this thread because you assumed (assumed=ass) that I was flaming MS. Well you were WRONG.

One more thing. Check your finder preferences to see what opens up when you click on finder on the dock. It should be set to open up your computer instead of your boot partition. You should find the Network icon from there and underneath it there should be a list of the domains on your network.

If it's a non-domain network, make sure that your windows boxes are in the same workgroup as your mac.

you should also be able to access the other computers by using command-k and entering their IP. (smb://192.168.1.1) or whatever the IP is.

The admin shares are never listed.  They have to be manually accessed.  I'm not sure if you can do it on a Mac.

Yeah you can, just press Apple+K and type smb://192.168.0.4/C$

192.168.0.4 is my server, you should change the iP to yours ;)

If it still doesnt work, you could use fink to compile smbclient and replace the OS X file with it, I had to do this on all the panther betas to get it to work, but in the final they fixed it :p
