gigapixels Veteran Posted January 14, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 14, 2004 Alright, here's the deal... I am a TA for a teacher here at my HS, and he teaches in one of the Mac labs. We've got a G4 in the back (what I'm on right now) that only the TAs use, and we also use it for video yearbook editing. The thing is, I made an account for myself because the other TAs from different periods just totally screw all the settings up and I was tired of it. So I made the account, took adminstrative capabilities away from the old one (so they couldn't do more damage) and gave myself administrative priveliges (obviously). Only I and another TA (that I thought I could trust) knew the password, but I'm guessing he told the others and they logged into the new account and changed the password. I walked in yesterday and my account was logged in for some reason, so I logged out to see if the old account was still there (which it was) and I tried to log back in, only finding out that the password had been changed and that they won't tell me. There's no reason for me to not have the password and it's really making me angry because I can't to a damn thing on this computer besides play music and surf the net (which both get boring after a while). Can anybody help me figure out how to get in? I know the board rules (of course, I've been here for a while) and how they say not to "discuss circumvention of protection mechanisms," but the thing is, the account was rightfully mine in the first place, so I need a way to get it back, or to get in and make another one of my own (of which the password will be told to no one). If the mods find this inappropriate, I'm sorry, but I didn't know what else to do. I will completely understand if you close this thread or anything. Thanks P.S.: If it would be safer to email me the answer so that not everybody who reads this thread can see it, that would be great.
danbalsh
If you've got the OSX Install CD/DVD boot off that by holding down C then choose reset password from the menu :)

Reboot the computer holding down C from the installer's file menu (i think that's where it is) choose to reset passwords. All done. EDIT: You beat me by seconds. uniacidz
Well dont you think that they were kinda ****ed when you took away the rights for them? Now you ****ed cos they took it from you. You took away privileges they had and you took it upon yourself and made yourself above them as you made their accounts have no rights. Eye for an eye. Karma. Next time, think before you do something like that. You are not above them in the social order.

uniacidz
Nah didnt mean it to sound bad or anything like that. But i would be annoyed if someone did that to my account, and i bet anyone including yourself would feel the same way. Thats what i meant. Is a simple case of what goes around, comes around. gigapixels Veteran Posted January 14, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted January 14, 2004 Davey: Yeah yeah I know that, but the thing is, they didn't even care when they found out, so I don't see why they're doing it, but they're not the nicest people anyway... As for the technique shown to me: I read about that but I wasn't totally sure... So I don't need an admin password or anything to do that? It will work without it? If so, that's awesome, because my teacher wouldn't have a problem with me doing that. Thanks.

You should not see any problems, that is unless the OpenFirmware is locked in which case your boned :pinch: but it's highly unlikely your firmware is protected. isus
i think the obvious thing here is, don't trust that other person next time. no admin priveleges for any of them.
