ThunderThor
I looked around and really couldnt find anything that helped me too much. I just installed Redhat 9, I wanted to learn to get around Linux so I figured I'd install Redhat and try. I keep seeing everyone having there desktops having transparent windows and such, and some even seem to have a good aim client. Gaim didn't impress me a whole lot, but there was something for plugins. Is that what everyone is using, or some kind of other client? Also does Redhat have any built in dvd player, i see a video player and such, just wondering. Also inconcluding if anyone knows any good sites with pointers on learning redhat or any version of linux for that matter, could you post a link? That way I could keep from making topics for something that I could read and figure out on my own. Thanks.. John.
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 15, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 15, 2004 If your interest is multimedia (MP3s and DVDs) then RH is probably not the best first choice, out of the box. In respect to the patent owners for the MP3 compression and CSS encryption for DVDs, RedHat does not support these in their distros. There are plenty of RPMs to 'fix' this. Google for them, and you will find what you need there. As far as eye candy goes, there is plenty out there. Most of which is in the settings. Try both KDE and Gnome, to see what you like best (give each one a week or so). And for learning Linux, I have found that Basic Linux Training is a pretty good online training setup. They run it like a online university might do it. Only free. ;) If you run into problems, most of the people here will do what they can to help.
