PS2 Problems

Recommended Posts

I have had my PS2 for about 2 years now.

About 6 months ago it would occasionally not load a game or dvd for no aparent reason but a restart would solve that.

Now it has got really bad. Every disc takes ages to load. It says reading disc for ages and the drive makes no sound then about 5 min later the disc starts spinning and it loads.

Some discs dont load at all. FOTR dvd starts to spin then the PS2 makes awful loud clicks and sounds like its going to break. Other DVDs will just go in and it won't even say reading disc.

I doubt this problem can be solved because whatever it is, its probably a hardware problem and its now out of warranty. I just wondered why this has happened and if anyone else has experienced this.

This sounds like my brothers PS2. He used it loads, and it did similar things. It's your dvd/cd drive on it's way out. Watchdog did a report on it, and it's VERY common, yet Sony refuse it happens!

Apparently standing your PS2 on it's side or using it as a DVD player increase the chance of it happenning!

Are we talking about original CD/DVD here or not? My PS2 also makes weird noise sometimes with both original and copied media, especialy ever since I have Magic 3.1 installed. Recently I had problems with Prince of Persia, but I solved the problem by burning the CD with 2x speed (before that I burned it 4 times and it never worked), now it loads the CD fast and silently.

njlouch: where did you hear that about not being good if you have PS2 on its side? I'm curious since this is how my PS2 stands. Was it reported by people or something? Thanks for the answer in advance :)

Do you mean standing it vertical?

I never stand it vertical and haven't used it as a DVD player for a while since I got a stand alone.

I can understand DVDs wearing it down though. It is really only designed to read a single stream from a game disc but with DVDs it reads two or more streams at the same time but obviously with only one laser this means moving constantly backwards and forwards. If you listen closely when playing a DVD you can hear the laser constantly moving.

 I like Sony until now

Like I said, standing it vertical only adds to the problem. Yeah I think you are spot on about why the DVD usage also compounds the issue.

Screw Sony, cos I bet they will charge so much to replace the drive, you could get another PS2 for similar price!

Thats called the iso error, ( disk read error ) just call sony tell em you bought the ps2 10 months ago, ( less then a year) they'll give you a repair number,, ship back to em about $8 and they will put a new board and laser in it. ship it back free of charge.

Fugg - gonna lay my PS2 down as soon as I get home !

Again, my best mate has the same problem, but he's getting a funky silver one so isnt too worried.

my ps2 has problems reading dvds and games every once in a while, but if i run one of those dvd lens cleaner disks through it, it works perfectly again, try that (i'm told that the fans allow dust to get into the system pretty easily in teh ps2 design)

noonespecial777:

Of course, you are assuming Sony will believe that it is less than a year old, take it back, not check the version/serial number. Then even if they do, they will not bill you?

If he does as I described and they dont Ill buy him a new one myself . Im that postive I did it in november , november 10th to be exact and it was almost 2 years old and yes I gave em the serial number etc etc. you forget sony has no way of knowing how long it takes from shipment from their company to someone buying it, ive seen cases it sits on a shelf for 8 months before someone buys it. as I said they will honer it , or I'll buy him a new one myself.
