Fifteen years after its run on FOX, The Browncoats — fans of the universe created by Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron) — still clamor for more from the space pirate crew of Serenity, the Firefly-class ship that awoke their imaginations and Crazy Ivaned its way right into their hearts. So vocal was their outrage that the series made history with a 2005 cinematic sequel, Serenity, which tied up some loose ends and has since become a cult classic. It still wasn’t enough. For many, nothing less than the resurrection of Firefly will suffice, and it’s the one thing that has yet to happen no matter how vocal their cries become. Every few years some nugget of hope is dropped, teasing the fans with possibility without ever coming to fruition. Series star Nathan Fillion was busy with the ABC series Castlewhile Whedon had made successful moves into film by helming the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Castle now ended and with Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: Civil War) leading the MCU through Phase 3, fans had hoped that new episodes of Firefly would be on the horizon. It’s long been assumed that FOX itself was the main impediment to bringing the series back from the dead, but that may not be the case any longer. As reported by TV Overmind At a panel last month at Television Critics Association (via SlashFilm), FOX President of Entertainment David Madden suggested he’d be open to bringing the series back on the condition that Whedon himself was on board. That may sound like a sure thing to the ears of some fans, but Madden also noted that Whedon’s been busy with a film career in recent years, and Fillion threw water on the idea as recently as last year, saying that one season was “enough.” Still, it’s hard not to get excited knowing that FOX might be willing to take another trip into the black, and the network hasn’t exactly been shy about bringing back old properties in recent years. Last year saw the long-awaited return of The X-Files and later this season the network is bringing back another cult favorite, Prison Break. Even with Whedon and Fillion seemingly tepid on the idea, Browncoats aren’t exactly known for laying down quietly. For now, as ever, it seems as though it’s in Whedon’s hands. As a director, he’s always one to look forward and never back. It might be too much to hope that he’d be willing to jump back into the ‘verse after so long. If we’ve learned anything, however, we’ve learned that you can’t stop the signal. Knowing that FOX is, at the very least, open to the idea is enough to set imaginations running and renew hopes once more, no matter how impossible the odds.
