KenLin
I dumped RedHat as soon as they announced they were dropping desktop linux. I've tried SuSE 9, Mandrake, and Fedora. Fedora is RH9 with some different graphics. Lots of things are even still named redhat-blahblah I would recommend SuSE or Mandrake, too. They are all very good distros. SuSE was a bit of a challenge at first becaues it is so KDE-focused.
devilotX
I had moved from RH9 to SUSE when the decision to leave the desktop market hit.. I've moved into Xandros 2.0 for my desktop needs, its a wonderfull distro.
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 15, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 15, 2004 I, on the other hand run Fedora Core. I grew up on RedHat, and FC1 is pretty much the same thing with a new name...
+BudMan MVC Posted January 15, 2004 MVC Share Posted January 15, 2004 I dumped RedHat as soon as they announced they were dropping desktop linux. When did RH ever say they were dropping Desktop linux? - they still supply a distro for the destkop. Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS is the desktop/client partner for Enterprise Linux AS and Enterprise Linux ES. It is ideal for all desktop deployments, including office productivity applications, software development environments, and targeted ISV client applications. When configured as a headless workstation, Enterprise Linux WS is also ideally suited for use as a compute node in a High Performance Computing (HPC) environment. Its just a bit pricer ;) If anything - I would say they now support the desktop even more than before - since this distro is geared at the DESKTOP, not a cover all the bases type distro. markwolfe Veteran Posted January 15, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 15, 2004 I agree with you on this, budman. RedHat made a business decision to turn the 'hobbyist' user version to the hobbyists, and focus on their lifeline support (paying customers). So they have Enterprise editions for server systems They have Workstation versions (I forgot about this version) And the old "Red Hat Linux" for personal use is now Fedora Core. Less brand-dilution for them this way, perhaps? Most of the Anti-RedHat rhetoric going on now seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to the spin-off of RHL to Fedora.
