Email from FBI about Piracy?

Recommended Posts

The FBI handles national cases anyways. They'd have to get Canada's approval to do anything to their citizens. Also, they most certainly would not send you an e-mail, they'd send you a letter in the mail. A letter in the mail is more threatening because any tard can get your e-mail adress, but not your home adress. It's more formal anyways.

Well, with google it's easy to get people's info...did you know they do phone reverse lookups? Put in a phone # and it tells you the name & address.

I'd like to believe that the FBI would have a better command of basic grammar skills.

"Ah, an educated man. That rules out the possibility of you being a field agent."

Obviously. But you need to have the person's phone number to be able to do the reverse lookup, which they didn't post in the e-mail. The FBI would have access to get your home adress through your IP anyways.

Since you are in Canada, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I believe the FBI (if it really is them) would not email first, that they would contact you via some other means. Also, you are in Canada, which would be out of their jurisdiction.

FYI.. fbi has "jurisdiction" almost everywhere in the world provided they get the right paperwork done before hand... same wiff the cia.

Except I *believe* the CIA is generally not something that deals with U.S. citizens/things within the U.S. FBI is for within the U.S., CIA for outside of it. Different policies and procedures allowable.

I'm sure there's someone who'd know more than myself where such things might possibly overlap (though they've certainly had confusion in cases where things would, like international terrorists coming within U.S. borders).

Anyway, definitely a fraudulent email as already indicated, though I believe whoever sent it can have some pretty marked punishment for "impersonating" the FBI, etc.

Today I checked my email and one was from a unknown adress so I previewed it and it basicly said that downloading movies and mp3s is illegal, and my pc was scanned and my hard drive copied for evidence. It said I should expect some contact in a few days. The messege ended with an adress and FBI. The email also had an attachment which I didn't open as it looked like a virus.

Now my question is, this is bogus right? I don't believe this thing because I've been reciving emails the past couple of days with the same kind of attachment and email adress. The sender's adress always ended with @.webb or something.

Can you guys tell me what this about? Thanks

Bwhahahaha... Thats so fake.

...Some of the most gullible people I know wouldnt fall for something as stupid as that. You are an absolute moron. Who would/could copy your ENTIRE harddrive and then be nice enough to e-mail you about it? Have an obvious spam adress? AND attach a virus?

not even a n00b would fall for something like that :pinch:

Sendmail is a mail server (http://www.sendmail.org). You don't need to use Sendmail to send an email as someone else, SMTP will believe anything you say. With that said, you can use programs like OE or Thunderbird to send an email with anything in the To field.

Actually, I most cases liek this, the FBI will hand the case over to whatever local jurisdiction is responsible. They can NOT just get jurisdiction just with a bit of paperwork - they can't conduct searches, question/hold someone against their will. They MUSt operate through the local agencies.

I always find it funny when ppl says I live in canada so im safe

I personally live in canada and I wouldnt feel safe if i had anything illegal on my computer

you can be sure rcmp and fbi planned or are planning a task force for all this crap.

I saw FBI one at my university couple of years ago because the IT admin had a hole in his Unix system and someone was using the system for dump child porn.

so I doubd that we are safe as all ppl saying..

my 2 cents
