Learning German

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in learning another language and German interests me the most. There must be a lot of bilingual people on Neowin so which methods helped you learn another language the most? What are some good ways of learning German?I'm looking to become fluent in it, not just a person who needs to read out of their dictionary to piece together something.

German is a fairly simple language to learn. i used to live in germany and was fluent at one point. I would say that taking some sort of classes or spending a lot of time with germans and have one of them teach you would be the way to go. Once you get the basic grammar concepts then the rest is mainly vocab. it would be quite a challenge to learn all that alone though.

Although it would be best to go to a class and learn from someone who is fluent themselves, I've found that the Pimsleur series is quite good. Very little reading involved, it's almost all aural/verbal and you learn quite quickly. You'll get the basics down fast but if you truly want to become fluent you'd have to immerse yourself in the language (go to Germany for a bit ;) ). Watching/reading German books and movies helps too. I'm attempting to learn German too and although I have the pronunciation down, the grammar is pretty hard

well, I would say if you speak native a germanic language (as english is) , then it will be quite easier for you. For me, for example, is quite easier to learn portuguese and italian since I speak spanish. I do also speak german and a lil dutch. There are many ways, but I do believe the best one is getting a german girlfriend / affair . So that way you won't talk like a book

mmm but that could be an issue if you already have one :woot:

Just like ze-newie said. The pronounciation is not a big deal. We speak the words like they are written. The grammar is pretty hard.

Take some basic courses, read books, so you understand a little. Then come to Germany for a few month, if thats possible (it?s a nice country by the way).

Good luck

I used to live in Austria for 5 years and it didn't take me too long to become fluent in German, the only part that is really difficult about the language is the freaking spelling. Plus they have additional letters that the English alphabet does not have.

Deutsch ist ziemlich schwierig. :D

Deutch ist ziemlich schwerig.  :D

und hier komm dein juter Lehraaa (dont correct me I like to speak like that :p )

Deut S ch ist ziemlich schw I erig (I'm a smartass)

just a correction ;) , but nevermind my german used to be good, but since I began talkin dialects, plus hanging out with a lot of Ali-G's wannabes my german went down the toilett (grammar-quality - wise)

Like what? What are other basic words, like "the" (de, right?) and "nein" (no). What is "ist"? And is "Deutch" the word for German in German (it looks like "Dutch" to me)?

I'll look for some audio books and check out the libraries around here. Thanks for the help.

well , first of all is DEUTSCH (german and dutch are somehow similar),

IS = IST No=NEIN[promounced like nine] YES= JA [pronounced same as say Ja Rule]

and no man , it's not the = de you wish

there are 3 of them ====> der , das , die

wich would be in spanish el, lo , la ,

that is masculine, neutral , feminine

der Mann (the dude), das Auto (the car), die Frau (the beeach)

this site can be helpful to you :)

I am learnin deutsche, today was my 3rd class. i love it, its more like my native name (spanish) some letters and words just are pronunciated similary, tomorrow i'll have a exam, they'll ask em the numbers, The teaching method here is almost all the class (and i am on basic deutsche 1) is in deutsche, no spanish or english...

You don't need a special keyb to do the stuff, my keyb is an english one and i use ascii code for the ? and for the stressed vocals ? ? ? ? ?.

and for long texts what i do is make a code. for example.,. there are no words with double x, or double q, or double w, or double f. so i make for example XX=? so when i want to writte u?a (nail) i writte uxxa and then in find i replace i replace xx for ?, qq for ? and so
