Chris Lee
Is a 60mb ram amd k6 computer good with any linux distros? I want to use it as a test machine since windows runs slow on there(duh.). I want to "get my foot wet" with a Linux distro, but I don't know what type to start with. I have a 5 gigabyte hard drive. Any info would be great. Keep in mind I'm completely new to linux. Thanks in advance.
kemical
any distro with a lightweight wm like fluxbox/black box should be ok, but as far as running any gui clients (ie mozilla) it will all run slow on your pc
Chris Lee
I just want to run a server on it, testing, and have a GUI, at least as simple as Win 98...Any ideas which distribution I should go for? And do these dist have installation wizards?
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 16, 2004 Yeah, the distros (Mandy, Fedora, SUSE, and others) all will step you through the install. They won't hold your hand and TEACH you Linux, but they will provide you options, and allow some simplified automatic selections. However, your RAM seems to be a bit low.... Don't know your clock speed, but your distro will run. It might be a bit sluggish, especially with the graphics end. But, to throw on a PC and just play with Linux and learn, it's all good. Generally, the distros mentioned above are typically recommended for noobs.
kyro
I suggest you get Mandrake 9 or maybe 8 . its a good distro for newbie. also that ram thing really limits your options for GUI mode. I would also give you another suggestion . Linux is at its best when learnt from CLI (Command Line Interface) . Get a Linux Bible or something . start learning VI or Nano and start exploring the world or penguin. BTW linuxiso.org would be a good place to hunt for ISO downloads also try Distrowatch.comfor distro info and download links. Good lucK. :)
Chris Lee
I checked in my properties and say it's AMD K6 3d Processor, 350 MHZ and 60mb Ram. I used to have a 128mb stick of ram, but it some how don't work in there, but that's another topic, I will give it a good try again.
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 17, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 17, 2004 Just for reference, I just installed Mandy 9.1 on a Celeron 466MHz 98MB RAM, and it feels workable, but sluggish. Your Mileage May Vary...
Chris Lee
Thanks for the note, trying to fix my ram at another thread, if all goes well, I think I can get a GUI for linux.
