decent cheapish webcam for mac?

Recommended Posts

The problem I find with Logitech cams is that you have to really look at the box closely to see if they support the Mac. Some do, some don't. Just because you see two similar models doesn't mean they are the same, one might have Mac drivers and the other might not.

http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/ check the list of supported cams :)

Doesn't work well (at all?) in Panther, unfortunately (although I did use it with Jaguar). The stand-alone utility works fine with my old Creative WebCam II, but if I try to use the actual driver with anything, it locks up whatever program I'm trying to use (like Yahoo Messenger).

I have the same webcam and the same problem :(

That app worked perfect on jaguar, but it is really screwed up on panther. I emailed the author about it before, and he said it would be fixed when he had the time, this was back in october...

Ah, sorry, Didn't realise it wasn't panther friendly.

I attempted to use my (D-Link NetQam) cam with my mac a while ago, didn't work so I gave in and bought an iSight, superb little camera :)

That is what I used to ask, but now that it works with iMovie 4 I know that I will use it more then before.

I have tried them at a number of places, and the quality of images it produces is amazing, the only thing better would be a DV Camcorder, but then you are looking a $300-2000+....

It really depends how much you use your web-cam, I bought mine because I own a web-cam orientated web-site and therefore use it a lot :)

One one hand it's a really nice quality web-camera, nice and small, looks good, and is of course natively compatible with OS X.

On the other hand it's ?120... for a web-cam:blink:::DD

Here's a thread I started when I got mine, some pics showing the quality of it are in there: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?&act...60&t=117555&hl=

does look incredibly cool *jealous* but its just the price i can get it for ?109 with my student discount but its still ALOT of money especially me being a student and all :pp

i'll prob just get a cheap llogitech cam for now until i earn big bucks!!!:

Yeah, I'll admit the iSight is a bit expensive. Back when I was a student I made do with a ?25 cam from scan.co.uk, then again back when I was a student I made do with a Windows machine;))

The one major factor of the iSight that swayed me was guaranteed compatibility:))

hmmmmm...its tempting it really is  just a couple of questions, it works for ichat av but can you use it for yahoo messenger etc.? and you can take stills and use iphoto? and can you make little movies with it aswell?

and as i dont have broadband will it still be a good investment?

thanx

Use with Yahoo!, yup, tried that for the first time the other day with a friend. There doesn't seem to be a way of communicating with Audio with Yahoo! on mac though (although I may be mistaken, I'm new to it..)

Taking stills is no problem, not directly into iPhoto, but you can always import them afterwards, there are plenty of apps to take the stills, just search for "iSight" or "Webcam" on macupdate and versiontracker.

Same with movies, an app I found the other day, GCam does a superb job: http://macmice.com/gcam.html

Don't forget that iMovie '04 also now allows direct importing from the iSight. :)

As for using it on none-broadband, I wouldn't really know, I've had DSL since I've had my mac, I remember trying to use NetMeeting when I was back on dial-up though. It's usable, obviously the frame rate is quite slow, and you can't do much else with your connection at the same time as a video chat, I think that someone else better answer that one.

Yahoo! Messenger uses a Windows-only codec for their audio, which is why you can't do audio chat between the Mac and the PC with it. I really do wish Yahoo! would update their Mac client to have all of the features of the PC one, primarily the chat rooms, because the only other client that works for their chat rooms at this time is rather slow (ChitChat X). Charla also works(somewhat), but has problems browsing the list of chat rooms.

Yahoo! and MSN need to update. At least AoL have jumped aboard the Web-cam waggon so we can use iChat to converse with Windows users soon (I say soon, I really mean when AiM with web-cam features makes it out of beta and Apple update iChat to suit.)
