insanekiwi
a friend of mine named poopiepantspyro made a quick dvd ripping guide, i thought i'd share it :) Easy high-quality vcds, dvds, etc.... dual g5 2ghz 512gb ram OSEx and ffmpegX steps: 1. Install OSex and have it make a VOB file onto your hard drive. 2. install all ffmpegX components 3. install quicktime mpeg2 components 4.Open ffmpegX and go to the options section. 5. check DECODE WITH MPLAYER (instead of with Quicktime) 6. If you want a VCD, for example, Select the vcd preset from quick presets. 7. Open your VOB file which you made with OSex, by clicking Open... 8. BE PATIENT!! 9. set how many disks or what type of media you wish to use under "video" 10. i like to set audio to .mp3, .mp2 gave me problems... 11. Hit ENCODE 12. BE PATIENT AGAIN!!! 13. When ffmpeg Progress says 99%, be patient again because it will process any disk images that need to be made if you set that. it takes a couple minutes -- don't think it froze, it did not. 14. Open the disk image in Toast and burn hope that helps...

insanekiwi
you mean making backups of your own dvds? i don't think so.
sethrd
Backing up your own DVDs is perfectly legal, so long as you don't share or give them out.
Chad
Just use DVDBackup to decrpyt, DVD2oneX to shrink, and Toast to burn. There were a couple threads on this earlier.
NeoMayhem
If you check the open in ffMpegX "Open Terminal" you get more of an idea what is going on ;) 0Sex = faster to rip DVDs then DVDBackup (Lets you omit more stuff you probably dont want and cant fit on a 4.7gb DVD) ffMpegX = Higher Quality Video then DVD2OneX (at least in the 1 test I did it in, plus ffMpegX is free) So I think this is a better way to do it. Plus you can mac VCDs, SVCDs, and XviD with ffMpegX.

Osex is a beta program, and it shows. I've had multiple movies that it just wouldn't rip, due to pc stuff at the beginning of the dvd. dvdbackup has zero problems with those same dvds. Now, osex won't even launch, so the decision is a no brainer. ffmpegx produces no better video quality than dvd2onex. Toss on the fact you have to install mpeg2enc, mencoder and mplayer binaries, along with the ffmpeg app. Definately not worth the efford. All ffmpegx has going for it is that it's free.
