Yes of course - it was a transitional period.

My current thought is to buy a reasonably better GPU for about $100 and then wait for a complete makeover later on with a budget of more than $400

Well, you have a chance then - might be some options

The only thing that might be useful is case and P/S and the P/S is so unlikely.

- His P4 is useless

- His 512 meg RAM is useless

- His mobo is useless

CPU motherboard gpu psu ram

Doable, but not ideal....... You will have to butcher your current rig for some parts....

https://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD6300WMHKBOX-FX-6300-6-Core-Processor/dp/B009O7YORK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492928092&sr=8-1&keywords=amd+phenom

https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-6Gbps-Socket-Motherboards-GA-970A-DS3P/dp/B00CX4MUCC/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1492928135&sr=1-1&keywords=am3+motherboard

https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-FURY-1600MHz-DDR3/dp/B00J8E92R6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492928175&sr=8-1&keywords=4GB+ram

https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-VS400-Active-Certified-Supply/dp/B01MYNN9PL/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1492928190&sr=8-4&keywords=400watt+psu

$212.96 on a very quick amazon search, of course better components are available

If you prefer intel

https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Skylake-Desktop-Processor-BX80662I56500/dp/B010T6CWI2/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1492928414&sr=1-1&keywords=i5

https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Skylake-B150-Motherboard-M3/dp/B014YN6732/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1492928449&sr=8-2&keywords=lga+motherboard

But that's $313.27 just for the cpu and board, just subtract the cost of the amd board and cpu from the upper list (tired)

EDIT

Sorry, forgot to add a case, just in case your old one isn't atx

https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Elite-431-Plus/dp/B005ZCTJ9Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492930727&sr=8-1&keywords=coolermaster+atx+case

Add another $53.99

Another option would be to get a gaming console, and use the current PC for web browsing.

Simple hard truth is, @ that budget, whatever you get "might" "barely" get you what you want in some small way.  The end result will be you spent every penny you have, and in a short time, you will need an upgrade, or find yourself having to play on crappy settings, or miserable framerates.

Its not what you want to hear, but it is what it is.

Something like this should work for $50 and then add savings over time to the leftover $350 until there is a nice gaming rig to look forward to:

Not a lot of GPU there - something used on Ebay like a 570 would be a better thing to find.
