Toshiba Portege Z830 - 4 Finger Death Punch

Gesticulating wildly during a Skype session caused damage to the screen on my Toshiba Portege Z830-A256. 

The notebook can be hooked up to an external display, and works fine.

New replacement screen bought:
Toshiba Portege Z830 Serie 13.3" 45 WXGA HD 1366x768 LED matný
The computer starts up as normal, but the screen remains a graduating white/blue colour with fine coloured vertical lines - see pic1 and pic2.

Drivers are up-to-date. 

Tried disconnecting and reconnecting the screen with no change.

Is it likely to be a screen or cable problem?

Is the replaced screen just cracked (but otherwise functional) from over "gesticulating" ... try hooking it back up and see if the lines are reproduced.  If so ... you are probably hooking up the cable(s) wrong/not securely or the screens connector on the notebook has been damaged.  

 

If you are positive that the cable(s) are secured and no damage has been done to the connector on the notebook ... than, as Jason stated, you probably received a bad screen.  Hopefully they'll allow you to return it and get a new one.

Possibilities are:

 

1. A bad screen was shipped

 

- shipping damage is always a possibility

 

2. An incompatible screen was shipped

 

- most parts suppliers just maintain a generic cross-reference of part numbers which can be wrong depending on actual mobo revision, BIOS level and date of manufacturing etc. For example, I always use the Dell Parts People in Texas for my Dell repairs because I know they track only Dell equipment. Finding a Toshiba specialist would be a good idea.

 

- also as a minor note, if that laptop ever had a 1920 x 1080 screen option, then you could order that and be free of the EVIL CURSE of 1366 x 768 

 

3. The screen was installed incorrectly with a bad cable connection

 

- it's very easy to make a poor connection. Sometimes there is a very very tiny locking mechanism that is easy to miss.

 

4. The cables were damaged during removal or installation

 

- its very easy to damage the tiny ribbon cables, so inspect carefully and order a new set if any signs of damage

Thanks for your responses, everyone.

I tried all suggestions, and it seems to be a problem with the screen itself, not the notebook or notebook cable. So, the screen was returned and a claim made for money back. 

Interestingly, the contact person who responded to the claim is the same person who, last year, while working for a different company, tried to sell me a different incompatible screen for the same notebook!
