Wannes
:o SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Lindsay Davenport withdrew from the Adidas International semifinals Friday because of an injured right arm, casting doubt over her status for next week's Australian Open.Davenport was to play top-ranked Justine Henin-Hardenne, but pulled out. Davenport, seeded fifth for the Australian Open and the 2000 champion, strained chest and arm muscles in her quarterfinal win over Elena Dementieva. Later Thursday, she left a doubles semifinal as it was in progress. "I said yesterday my arm was a bit sore. Unfortunately, I injured it a bit more and after waking up this morning, it's just pretty painful and extremely tight," Davenport said. "It's really sad that I can't play. "At this point of where I am in my career and all the injuries I've had, I just feel it's best right now that I get my arm better," she said. Davenport remained hopeful she'd be OK to play her first-round match against Ruxandra Dragomir Ilie of Romania at the Australian Open on Monday. "The doctors and the trainers feel that three-to-four days' rest will make a huge difference, probably there's a chance that it will heal completely," Davenport said. "They think it's just the muscles." Davenport had surgery on her foot last October and made her comeback at the Hopman Cup last week, joining James Blake to win in the international mixed team tournament. The list of women already out of the Australian Open includes defending champion Serena Williams and other former winners Jennifer Capriati, Mary Pierce and Monica Seles. It seems to me that all good players are not going to the open, this will be good to see some new talents. :shifty:
