Draggendrop 5,747 Posted October 24, 2018 Looks like the above tweets were in reference to this test tunnel... This article has a lot of info...worth reading. Plans offer a peek into Elon Musk's tunnel in Hawthorne, including an elevator hidden in a garage Quote When Elon Musk’s tunneling firm began digging in Hawthorne last year, the construction site next to SpaceX headquarters was barely noticeable, sandwiched between a home improvement store and a parking garage. The engineers at work on the Boring Co.’s tunnel, which now runs for a mile beneath city streets, have signaled that they intend to finish as they started: away from the public eye. But documents submitted to city officials by Musk’s tunneling company offer a sneak peek at the company’s plans. The most futuristic is a blueprint for a steel elevator shaft inside the garage of a shabby house near the Hawthorne Municipal Airport that would connect with the test tunnel 40 feet below. “We’ll be completely contained within the garage,” Boring Co. employee Brett Horton told officials last month when the project received approval from the Hawthorne City Council. “You won’t be able to see or hear it.” The structure would serve as a covert place for engineers to practice raising and lowering vehicles into the test tunnel, a key element of the transportation system known as “Loop.” much more at the link... http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-elon-musk-hawthorne-20181023-story.html

FloatingFatMan 18,811 Posted November 17, 2018 Sorry, but "personal elevators", or in fact ANY elevator access to the tunnels is a bloody stupid idea. It's stupidly expensive and a massive failure point. Far cheaper, easier and safer to just build ramps down to access stations where you can board, like mini subway/metro stations. And I do wish the idiot media would stop confusing this, which is just a metro, with the bloody Hyperloop...
Draggendrop 5,747 Posted November 17, 2018 I am not overly sold on the elevators either. This "hole" is primarily for getting the rig up and out to the street for transport to the next job. I would think that ramps to staging tunnels will become the "norm" later on. Right now it is sort of a "Future expo" for exposure of the system. Throughput economies will dictate simplicity down the road....I hope. 😎

Jim K 13,735 Posted November 28, 2018 Quote After lawsuit, Elon Musk’s company drops plans for a tunnel under Sepulveda Boulevard Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s tunneling company has dropped its plans to dig beneath Sepulveda Boulevard on the Westside, months after a lawsuit alleged that the city of Los Angeles violated state law when it sought to exempt the tunnel from environmental review. In a joint statement Tuesday, Musk’s firm — Boring Co. — and the group of Westside advocates that sued over the project in May said they had “amicably settled” the lawsuit. An attorney for the groups said the settlement agreement was confidential. Instead of pursuing plans to dig beneath Sepulveda on the Westside, Musk’s tunneling company will focus on an underground link between Dodger Stadium and a Metro station about 3½ miles away, the statement said. The lawsuit and the settlement agreement mark the first major setback for Musk’s ambitious goals for tunneling in California. /snip LA Times First road block

Draggendrop 5,747 Posted November 30, 2018 Time to get the "mess" straightened out...again. The LA times article, above, and the NBC news piece..that I won't even bother to link, Have something in common. Both have been created by supposed "journalists"...who apparently don't understand the concept of "fact checking". Fact checking would just get in the way of bashing or misrepresenting for "clicks". They need to get one thing straight...The Sepulveda tunnel ...was a test tunnel...one of a few. The "NIMBY" group effectively did Elon a favor as they did not need this test tunnel after all, and the NIMBY group has now ensured that the area will be avoided now. The Boring Company Extracts Segment of Tunnel Boring Machine, 11-27-18 Quote TESLARATI.com Published on Nov 29, 2018 SUBSCRIBE 794 The Boring Company’s tunnel boring machine (TBM) has completed digging a 2-mile test-tunnel in Hawthorne, CA. The Boring Company’s tunnel boring machine (TBM) has completed digging a 2-mile test-tunnel in Hawthorne, CA. The company intends to use electric TBMs, more efficient logistics as well as SpaceX rocket technology to revolutionize the tunnel boring industry. video is 1:28 min. -------------------------------------------- Elon Musk’s Boring Company extracts TBM segments as tunnel debut nears THE BORING COMPANY BEGAN REMOVING GODOT, ITS FIRST TUNNEL BORING MACHINE, ON NOV. 27. (PAULINE ACALIN) Quote On November 27, a large crew of Boring Company employees and contractors converged upon the company’s Praire Avenue work site, home of a number of recent milestones for the tunneling startup’s 2-mile long test tunnel situated beneath Hawthorne, California. Just a handful of blocks away from SpaceX’s main rocket factory, The Boring Co. completed the removal of its first tunnel boring machine (TBM), allowing the company to begin cleaning up the site, preparing it for the installation of a brand new elevator shaft capable of transporting vehicles or custom sleds into or out of the tunnel. The extraction of Godot, the tunneling startup’s first TBM, was shared by the company on its official Twitter account. Godot is a conventional TBM, and during the company’s information session earlier this year, Elon Musk noted that the machine would be succeeded by Line-Storm, which is “essentially a hybrid between a conventional boring machine and Proof-Rock, a fully Boring Company-designed machine.” Being electric-powered, Proof-rock is expected have 3x more power and operate 10-15x times faster than Godot. On the same day as the TBM removal began, news broke that The Boring Company had settled with a number of Los Angeles-based complainantsand chosen to cancel a proposed extension of the test tunnel expected to run under Sepulveda Boulevard. Counter to a narrative coming out of several media outlets that TBC had effectively canceled an important tunnel against the company’s will, Elon Musk clarified that the actual explanation for the change in plans was largely positive, with the company believing that it no longer needs additional practice thanks to experience gained through the construction of its first test tunnel. Instead of pursuing the Sepulveda tunnel extension, The Boring Company instead believes that it can and should move directly to a more ambitious network of tunnels to crisscross subterranean Los Angeles, known as the Dugout Loop thanks to the inclusion of Dodger Stadium as a primary destination. Amidst the Boring Company’s preparations for the December 10 opening party of its Hawthorne test tunnel, the site of the Prairie Ave pit, which is expected to be the location of the Boring Company’s prototype garage-elevator concept, has shown lots of activity. Just recently, Teslaratiphotographer Pauline Acalin was able to capture images of multiple semi-trucks loading and transporting extricated TBM segments. Based on the photographs we acquired, dozens of employees and/or contractors were present during the TBM extraction. The removal and transportation of the TBM segments from the Prairie Ave. pit appear to have been completed in ~24 hours from start to finish as well, as other members of the Teslarati team who visited the area not long after the photos were taken noted that the boring machine segments have already been transported elsewhere when they arrived. The extraction of Godot from the Prairie Ave. site bodes well for The Boring Company’s planned operations in the future. Conventional tunneling practices, after all, usually involve leaving expensive TBM components such as the cutting head underground after work is complete due to high costs associated with their retrieval. In classic Elon Musk fashion, the Boring Company has opted for reusability instead, seemingly using its prototype garage-elevator concept as an exit point for its TBM segments. The experience gained by The Boring Company in its Hawthorne test tunnel would help the tunneling startup tackle its most ambitious project to date — Chicago’s upcoming downtown to O’Hare high-speed transport line, which is expected to break ground as soon as the project’s permits are completed. Updates about the Chicago project have been scarce so far, though photographs taken by Teslarati photographers suggest that a gantry for the Chicago tunnel line, as well as what appears to be a next-generation TBM, is under construction. Looks like they did indeed finish that running surface... 😂 Quote Elon Musk Says ‘Hyperloop’ Tunnel Is Now Just a Normal Car Tunnel Because ‘This Is Simple and Just Works’ Back in 2017, Elon Musk had grand visions for the test track built by The Boring Company, his tunneling firm, in Los Angeles. The Boring Company’s tunneling work was closely linked to Musk’s Hyperloop idea, which would require hundreds of miles of tunneling to be viable, although the actual test track in California bore none of the traits of an air vacuum-based transportation system. It would have proprietary vehicles with varying capacities for private travel, public transport, or freight. They would travel along electrified skates for frictionless movement. It would be fast and efficient, but more importantly, it would be different, because he’s a genius. Six months ago, the first demonstration of that track didn’t quite match that vision: it was a Tesla Model X on a sled going down a very bumpy tunnel at roughly 50 mph. At the time, Musk said the bumpiness was only temporary: “That bumpiness will definitely not be there down the road—it will be smooth as glass.” Credit where credit’s due: it does appear to be smooth as glass now, according to a video The Boring Company released of a car going 127 mph down the tunnel. How did it achieve such miraculous speed and comfort improvements in a mere six months? They paved it. Yes, for those keeping score, in a mere two years we’ve gone from a futuristic vision of electric skates zooming around a variety of vehicles in a network of underground tunnels to—and I cannot stress this enough—a very small, paved tunnel that can fit one (1) car. https://jalopnik.com/elon-musk-says-hyperloop-tunnel-is-now-just-a-normal-1835024474 Well that turned out to be a colossal failure. No study 🙄 That's a Loop tunnel, not HyperLoop. There's a difference of 1) Loop has no vacuum, 2) about ~600 mph, and 3) Loop is an intra-city transport system, HyperLoop is inter-city. Leveling/smoothing the running surface was always in the plan, but they discovered the vehicle's 12 side-pointing ultrasonic sensors and forward-facing radar made the guide wheels unnecessary. As for the skates, they were Model X chassis. Try harder next time. Jalopnik sure didn't. Edited May 26 by DocM 2

FloatingFatMan 18,811 Posted May 27 I really don't get the hype with this stupid thing. All Musk has done here is built a one car metro that cost effectively the same as a mass transit metro; this tunnel cost was NO CHEAPER than any other tunneling project, despite what the half truths and hype claim. Hardly a breakthrough in either cost OR efficiency; quite the opposite in fact... The man might be good at running rocket and car companies, but ffs, leave mass transit to people who actually know what they're doing.
