Custom Resolutions?

Recommended Posts

I have a friend that is going to be getting a new iBook, but will be wanting to hook it up to his projector.

Are there any ways to output a custom resolution (858x484) via the vga out?

I have never heard of a projector using that resolution, but when I hook a projector up at work to my powerbook, it automatically detects what it is and lists all available resolutions. So in theory, yes, but it sounds like some oblique projector so maybe not.

Any projector I've hooked up to my has PowerBook worked perfectly. It treats it as another screen as a matter of fact, so it can have its own resolution. It's great. :D

It would still downscale the image to work, but it would be a much better picture if it was in the projector's native resolution, is there a way to set custom resolutions on a mac?

No, it doesn't scale the image down to size. Like jagedEdge said, it treats it as another screen, so you set a totally separate resolution for it. It then outputs that resolution to the device, just as it would if you were on a different monitor. If your projector is a fairly known brand name, the Mac should recognize it automatically and all it's supported resolutions, giving you the option to switch between them.

I have never heard of the resolution you mentioned through a projector however. It seems very unusable so I am guessing that your projector is not as modern as most. The only way to tell for sure is to just hook it up and see what happens. Take it into an apple store if you need to.

You can only set the resolutions that are supported for screens. Usually this includes resolutions with the same aspect and pixel ratios, however, with some monitors, just about any resolution you want is available.

No, the projector downscales any image greater than that resolution, it just looks better. It's like a tv being 640x480 natively, but you can have up to 1024x768 downscaled on it (assuming it's not hdtv of course)

Almost any resolution will work, but 858x484 (or a multiple of it) looks much better than "standard" resolutions (1024x768 etc)

You don't appear to be listening to what the people here are telling you. The projector will be detected as a different monitor and the resolutions that it supports will be listed in the display preferences. Have you even tried it yet?

That projector is not really mean to be used as a computer screen. It looks like it is a widescreen video projector. Most computer centric models either project in 800X600 or 1024X768.
