Batfink
So I have been getting pestered this morning as no one in the house seems to be able to access certain websites such as hotmail.co.uk, which I managed to reproduce on all my systems but strangely this did not affect all other websites or connected devices. So I turned the Router and VDSL+ Modem off and on, but the issue persisted... However, when I turned on a VPN service on one of my systems, it was able to connect to all the effected websites without issue... Very, very weird this... Its also affecting https://login.live.com, fortunately Ad services like the ones used on the daily mail website to serve crap suggesting articles and connections to the EvE Online Tranquility server I did trace routes both with the VPN off and on: VPN Off Andrews-iMac:~ andy$ traceroute www.hotmail.co.uk traceroute to dispatch.kahuna.glbdns2.mic... +InsaneNutter MVC Posted May 28, 2017 MVC Share Posted May 28, 2017 It could be a DNS issue with your ISP's DNS servers, you could try using Googles DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) The traceroute will be different when using a VPN as your connecting to Hotmail from a different location on the internet, so in theory will end up with a Hotmail server closer to the location of your VPN. Batfink
Thanks Nutter, I should have added that I have tried different DNS servers as suggested, the router is configured to use open DNS but I have tried the Google DNS servers and the same issue is prevelant. Also BT Support is unobtainable Andrews-iMac:~ andy$ traceroute support.bt.com traceroute to resolve.bt.com (62.239.186.96), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets 1 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 0.709 ms 0.523 ms 0.495 ms 2 * * * 3 * * * 4 31.55.186.180 (31.55.186.180) 11.545 ms 10.973 ms 13.787 ms 5 195.99.127.110 (195.99.127.110) 11.099 ms 11.285 ms core3-hu0-1-0-1.faraday.ukcore.bt.net (195.99.127.34) 11.113 ms 6 * 62.6.201.146 (62.6.201.146) 15.153 ms 62.6.201.144 (62.6.201.144) 11.421 ms 7 * * * 8 * * * 9 * * * 10 * * *
+InsaneNutter MVC Posted May 28, 2017 MVC Share Posted May 28, 2017 (edited) It could be a routing issue on your ISP's network in that case, I remember the other year Virgin Media had a similar issue. I wasn't able to get on certain websites such as Ebay, however tunneling my internet though a dedicated server I had allowed me to browse the internet as normal. The trouble there was Virgin blamed Ebay and Ebay blamed Virgin, this went on for a few days, however eventually the issue was resolved after a lot of people reported the issue. I'd suggest opening a support ticket with BT via your VPN, your likely not the only person with the issue.

I was going to say this as well. I've found that a lot of issues get resolved with DNS.
sc302 Veteran Posted May 28, 2017 Veteran Share Posted May 28, 2017 Vpn successfull connect vs non vpn successfull connect. Are the resolution ips the same? What happens when you try to trace the vpn ip resolve on the non vpn connection. Does it go through?
