Icons not being deleted on desktop

Windows 7 64 bit laptop. When I move a icon from the desktop to a file folder or when I delete a icon from the desktop they stay there until I refresh the desktop. I ran Hitman Pro and it found nothing. I took a some updates from MS yesterday and today is the first time this has happened.
