WPS Office 2016 for Linux announced after uncertainty

A few days ago, Kingsoft released WPS Office 2016 for Linux following a short period of time when doubt was cast over whether the development of the office suite on the operating system would cease. This new release confirms development has not stagnated. New features include remote file sharing, added search functionality for Writer, and improved IO operations for enhanced software performance.

Some of the other additions to this release are:

  • Updated display effects of control and fonts
  • Updated WPS export to PDF hyperlinks
  • Updated thumbnail preview effects in WPS Presentation

William Wong, General Manager for WPS Office, said:

“As business demands evolve in an ever more diverse computing landscape, the demand for Linux-based applications has also increased. Our involvement with the Linux community has been unwavering and we now celebrate continued success with the release of WPS Office 2016 for Linux.”

WPS Office boasts more than 1.2 billion installs, and supports many Microsoft Office file formats "including PPT, DOC, DOCX, XLS, and XLSX". On the Linux platform, it is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavours. The blog post says that the “latest update is made possible with the support of the WPS Office open source community.”
