what should i do

Recommended Posts

I surround myself with computers in my room and each one has a specific use: Main/gaming, TV/dvd/entertainment, and server. I had a file server but I really dont need one so its sitting in the corner. Anway, I built this lady a computer and she gave me her old one. Its a P3 550 so its not TOO old, Im debating what to do with it. Ive loaded xp on it and it seems to run fine, my only real thought was to use it as a foot stool but thats a waste. any ideas?

Hmmm... 550? Well, you could run it as a test machine. Set it up with any OS you want and do anything and everything to it. Maybe tweak it out. Edit things in the registry. WHATEVER. If it crashes, oh well.

You can use it for gaming as well. 550Mhz will run older games (if you have any).

A storage server could work. Depending on the hard drive size, you can simply use it to store files like images, drivers, installations to programs, ect... It would be nice if you could connect to one computer and get everything you need to setup and install a new computer (or reinstall one).

If you have LOADS of space on it, you can rip the game CDs you have to ISO or BIN, and place them all on the computer. Then, if you have a gaming session going on with your friends, you can simply tell them to connect to that computer and run off of the image (you need an emulation tool to do that). But, that can create some lag on the network if to many people run at once.

Set up a domain on it. 550Mhz can run a domain controller. It just takes alot longer to set up. That's just choice though. I would do it to get more expirence with domains (that's the field I'm in).

That's about all I can think of now...

I'm in the same boat as you dude, I got an Athlon 900 MHz machine and a PII 266MHz machine. I'm thinking distributed computing on both though, not sure which one?

:-D i made a sort of gaming machine out of a duron 950. i built the case from scratch and everything. I dont really need a DC (I did the domain things myself, im mcsa). its only got a 13 giger in it so no real large space to waste there. I guess I could make another gaming comp out of it, Id have to buy a gfx card for it then.
