Fusion
My finder will crash and restart a lot when I select two or more files and try to move them somewhere. This usually happens with images or other files on the desktop and then I just click and drag a line selecting them all. As soon as I click and move the mouse to try to move the files somewhere, they all just disappear, the finder quits and then it restarts. It will do this indefinitely until I just move the files one by one. What the heck is up with my finder? Anyone else experience this?
mrelusive978
:ninja: I had a similar situation with 7B59, but the final release is stable as hell for me...have you tried to reinstall to alleviate the problem? Extreme, for sure, but I bet it works. :ninja:

Steve
I have the same problem too, its always with data on the desktop, for me. To get around it, i open the desktop a Finder window, but it is still very annoying :(.
shodan
I have the same problem, but i find it only when i select and move more than 1 image. I don't remember have this problem in 10.3.1 but for sure on 10.3.
skywalker
Try using Dragster 1.6.1 (available at www.macupdate.com) to fix this
Fusion
Thank you for your help skywalker but that looks like a pretty sketchy app. Not only is it made for 10.2 but the two comments on the download page talk about people not being able to login after they use it and loosing their file type associations with apps. Doesn't seem worth the risk to try it and from the description it doesn't sound like it was made to address the specific problem that we are all having. Do you have personal experience with this? It is comforting in some way though to know that I am not the only one with the problem. It is mainly when dragging more than one image file from the desktop. It has also been happening with me from 10.3.0 to 3.2 in each one. Anyone know what could be causing this?
skywalker
The reason for your problem seems to be that one (or more) of your Finder related preference files got corrupted. Dragster deletes them, so that they're being rebuilt by the Finder. You may use any other utility which is able to delete your preferences (Tinkertool System should do etc.) Don't forget to backup your ~/Library/Preferences folder ... Fusion
post your crash logs Ok, I think I found it but it is really long. It was in the console under crash logs and then finder.crash.log It was extremely long so I just put it into a text file. If I am not mistaken it looks like it has something to do with APE. Could someone verify this? Crash_Log.txt Edited January 20, 2004 by Fusion
Wickedkitten Veteran Posted January 20, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 20, 2004 it looks like it is, to double check go to ape manager under preferences, then hit the big information tab, click disable temporarily, then logout, log back in and see if the same thing happens

Chad
That's what I was going to suggest as well. Check to see if there are any updates you are missing. Any of you guys happen to be running any themes? It's a long shot, I know, but better safe than sorry.
Fusion
I repaired permissions just a little while ago when I was dealing with another unrelated issue, just some files I had moved over I only had read access to. So I used cocktail and took care of that. I am not missing any updates, I just did the iCal one yesterday and nothing else is on the board. I am running Milk in dlta format, not with shapeshifter, however, I had this problem with the original Panther install, without any themes, so my guess is that is not it. What about everyone else having this issue, notice anything weird?
skywalker
Did your Mac come with Panther or did you upgrade? Did you do a clean install? Did you install any application from an Apple application&system restore CD/DVD prior to 10.3, afterwards? This may be far fetched but a while ago (when installing Panther the very first time) I encountered a similar problem when adding some applications (like iDVD and OS9 support) from the 10.2.7 restore DVD that came with my Powerbook. I guess that either the restore helper application or the OS9 support did harm my Panther installation.

My problem appeared after I did a software update, and when I did another software update It was fixed. The problem was just gone. before that I tried everything (well not everything) but everything that any Mac use would do right away. (Repair Permissions, repair disk) but none of those helped me. If you havent done thins yet you should do them. And before and after every software update you should do those too. Ok my explanation is bad, someone else can translate it. HellScream63
then, did you ever gat a kernal panic? Specifically for mine, it happened after a software update and a kernal panic following it, THAT was the cause, but if i JUST got a kernal panic, and didnt do a software update, most likely there would have been no problem. But Im not sure on that part, im just guessing though because the kernal panic was caused by the software update when the system called upon a newly installed system update driver and caused a panic the the UNIX Subsystem and blah blah blah.
