Help me with a build

Recommended Posts

Got a friend who just stopped by and is needing a new system. His only requirements are that it be able to do gaming (not even the new games, older like Star Trek Armada, etc) and he needs a large display, because he is going blind in one eye. I told him that he is most likely looking at $500-$1000 for something like that, and he had to check with his wife and see what the budget is going to be. So if you all could help me by putting together a system on pcpartpicker and sharing the link(s), I would appreciate it, also CPU does not matter, I know nothing about Intel, and very little about the new AMD CPU's. Also I would prefer to use Nvidia for the GPU. He might have a case, so I might be able to scratch it off, but I have to wait and see.

Edit: I put one together on the fly, not sure how well it works:

I'd step it up to a 28" monitor.  They're not that much more than the 24".

You also might want to add an SSD.

I thought about the SSD, but he really would not notice the speed difference, so I opted to leave just the standard HDD in. As for the 28" monitor, I'm sure he would like that, I'll investigate the price. Do you know a decent brand to look for, or is any of them OK?

To up the monitor to 28" it will at $60, so not too bad.

Get a 120GB M.2. If he knows how to save all his game files on the HDD, that'd be less stress on the HDD.

I really do not think he would understand and/or remember to do so, but I will take that under advisement as well.

I'd go with a 2TB drive just because Windows NTFS will see max 2.2TB unless you plan on 2 partitions. I'd also bump up to a 1050ti 4GB

Think you're confusing MBR and GPT.

You need a better video card and a lower resolution monitor.

A Geforce GTX 1050 cannot drive a 4K monitor.

Video card upgraded to Geforce GTX 1060.

Memory upgraded to 16GB DDR4

32 inch IPS monitor

added 240GB SSD

Power supply is overkill. Replaced with cheaper power supply.

Since I took the time to find parts for you, I ask that you post photos of the build. Do we have a deal?

The best for around the price as the one listed above

1920x1080 spread out across 32" will be nasty.

But considering the budget - he needs to learn to live with nasty.

Rosewill PSU ?  The Best Buy stuff ?  Unless those are secretly made by Seasonic, and not some crap reject parts from Seasonic, I'd avoid Rosewill.

use separate thread for your issue, you must be doing something wrong or missing the GPT, how'dya sure about GPT? have you check the BIOS  boot disk is using UEFI?

Not really, I got 1920x1080 on a 32 inch Sammy curve it's sharp, no 'bleed' anywhere, doesn't look blurry or anything. (Total resolution is 5760x1080)

Me, too. I have my 34" curved at 2560x1080. Not getting any nastiness.

When did OP ever say he/friend is running off a 4K monitor?

8GB is enough for low gaming.

As he said above, a SSD maybe isn't a good option here.

PSU overkill? where have you been? That is clearly the right amount of wattage for his set-up.

Why does he need to provide pictures? Sounds like laziness to me...

Did you even think before you start writing?

The build that OP included has a 4K monitor.

300W power supply is recommended for a build with Geforce GTX 1050. 400W power supply is recommended for a build with Geforce GTX 1060.

I am not going to answer the rest because they can similarly be answered by just reading and/or using a search engine.

Monitor is still in consideration *smh*

I have not read anywhere in jnelson's post that the items are bought, paid for, and delivered!

Sheesh.

Specs for 1050 - 7680x4320@60Hz max res...

4k res = 3840 pixels × 2160

So it's actually capable of driving a 8k display or 2x 4k displays...

1080p on 32" display is fine.

It's as much as his budget allows, so what more can I say?

Well - I stand corrected.   Guess its time to get my eyes checked. ><

It's implied that I was talking about gaming.

Obviously, he can have a Geforce GTX 1050 outputting spreadsheets in 4K.
