How to stop Hiccups?

Recommended Posts

Fill your mouth full of water, hold your arms up in the air (pointing towards the sky), tilt your head right back and slowly swallow the water in your mouth. Keep your hands in the air and head tilted back for a little while after....usually works

Or

Get someone to scare the sh!t out of you, and then forget that they are going to scare you

Or

Get someone to make a bet with you where they'll give you a couple of dollars if you can hiccup again.

The last one has worked on me whenever someone's done it to me

Whenever I get hiccups. I fill my lungs with air and then hold my mouth and nose shut (I pinch my nose with my fingers) to stop any air escaping. Waits for nearly a minute until the hiccups stops and I exhale slowly. Works very well for me.

Sometimes drinking a glass of water down in one go fairly quickly works for me too... although sometimes I have to have a few glasses :(

I'll try the slow breathing one next time :)

The only method that works every time is to drink water backwards

Hold the glass in front of you. You have to put your head down and drink out of the opposite side of the glass. It isn't hard when you try it but it is handy to have someone actually show you what to do.

I don't why this works but it works EVERY time.

You can either cover your mouth and nose with your hands and breathe in and out slowly, or breathe in and out of a paper bag slowly with it covering your mouth and nose. What this does is increase the percentage of Carbon Dioxide you're inhaling and calms your diaphragm.

I can't believe this hasn't been suggested...

Drink as much of a carbonated (preferably heavily carbonated - ie. Vernors) drink as you can then let out the biggest burp you can manage. I get rid of mine every time doing that. At the sign of the first hiccup, I notice that I've got some pressure that could easily be a burp. Sure enough, gone every time. :x
