icyorange
Hi, I'm currently debating on which Mac to get - an eMac with Superdrive, or an iBook 12". One of the deciding factors is the screen resolution, which is obviously bigger on the eMac, and i'm just wondering if I would be able to manage with 1024*768 on the iBook. Would somebody be able to do me a couple of quick screenshots of the default workspace in Dreamweaver and Flash, like just after you've opened them to a blank document? Please :) Cheers, Nick
Timan Veteran Posted January 20, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 20, 2004 1024x768 is perfectly fine, but of course higher-resolutions are funner. If you do get an iBook there is a little Apple Script you can run that will allow desktop spanning. So when you hook up say a monitor you can get much higher-resolutions. Heres a Screenshot of Dreamweaver Mx

wreckk
I had the same dilemma I use 1600x1200 on my pc and I have a 12' powerbook that only does 1024 but honestly its not that hard to make due after a week you get used to it. also when you output to a normal monitor you can go as high as the monitor allows. I would go with the ibook.
icyorange
Hi, Thanks for all your replies and screenshots. I'm really not sure which to go for now... I suppose an iBook might be better so I can easily take it on the train with me to and from Uni, and to impress clients when I talk websites with them :) ... but the eMac has a DVDRW drive which is very handy seeing as I download lots of TV series... but then I suppose I could go for the 60gb hard drive in it which would sort that problem. What do you guys think - iBook or eMac? Will the 800mhz in the iBook be fast enough for web development (Flash/Dreamweaver), multimedia development with Director, programming and Virtual PC (I still need MS Access)? I'd be very grateful for any advice you could give me! :D Cheers, Nick
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted January 20, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 20, 2004 Does your University have wireless internet? If so, I'd *definitely* get the iBook. Also, if the train ride is significant enough, I'd get the iBook too. Also, if you want to show a client work in progress while on the road, a laptop is helpful too. It'll probably be able to handle everything, except the Virtual PC usage, just fine. However, if you don't have any problem with not having a portable system, you might want to get the eMac. Also, be sure to check on on educational discounts ;)
icyorange
Isn't the iBook up to running VPC very well? The prices in the Higher Educaton store are so much cheaper, but I can't decide which one to get. Nick
Timan Veteran Posted January 20, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 20, 2004 It runs alright, if you must have windows its very usable, but thats it.
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted January 20, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 20, 2004 Yeah, I'm coming from someone on a G3 iBook, so I honestly don't know. But I haven't like using VPC in general. I'm waiting on G5 support :p
Fusion
No Mac really runs VPC well. It will feel like a Pentium 1 with 32mb ram if that.

I dunno, the Dual 1.25's I tried it on at the Apple store a long while ago ran it pretty well for the basic apps. I'd equate it (on those machines) to a P3 500 or so with about 128MB of ram :)
danbalsh
My 800Mhz G4 runs VPC fine with Win98se, tried it with XP but was totally unusable. All depends what kinda apps you'd want to run in VPC I guess, most apps have a Mac equivalent.
icyorange
Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but would somebody be able to take a screenshot of the default layout in Macromedia Flash, with the dock hidden? Koyder
There you go: 1024 by 768 pixels, Flash MX 2004, default layout.
icyorange
Thanks for that Koyder. Do you notice any speed increases in MX 2004 Pro over MX? Cheers, Nick
session
There you go: 1024 by 768 pixels, Flash MX 2004, default layout. Your scroll bar looks different from mine  the arrows on mine are on the same side (like they're both on the buttom (vertical scrolling) and right (horizontal scrolling))
Koyder
Do you notice any speed increases in MX 2004 Pro over MX?I can't really tell, as I used Flash MX on my old Pentium II, after which everything seems hella snappy. Try looking for some reviews of MX 2004, they sure mention the speed increase factor.Your scroll bar looks different from mine the arrows on mine are on the same side (like they're both on the buttom (vertical scrolling) and right (horizontal scrolling)) There's an option to set scroll arrow placement in System Preferences -> Appearance. Timan Veteran Posted January 27, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 27, 2004 I can't believe you guys don't auto-hide the Dock at 1024x768! Some people have different ways of using the space on the screen. I'd run my ibook on my pc monitor if the colors did not look like **** :(. Could get much a higher res.
