Am I screwed?

Recommended Posts

Ok...so..um...where to begin?

It was late, I was a bit..umm...excited?, and I'd just finished watching "the simple life". Long story short is I downloaded what I thought was going to be a certain, infamous tape involving paris hilton in various states of undress.

Well I did, and I double clicked it but it was a trick because it wasn't a video.

It opened up a little program. I've attached a screeny.

Is this a virus? I haven't noticed anything odd happening....yet...

The file was actually Original Paris Hilton Sex Tape.mpg.exe

Does anyone know anything about this?

Thx,

that's pretty funny. Well, did you anti-virus notice anything? If not ... it might just be some silly little program someone wrote. Although ... I wouldn't click that button ;)

You probably have something, either a virus or spyware. Go to www.antivirus.com and run the housecall scan, and I would also download spybot and/or adaware and run on your machine also (make sure you do a update before you scan!)

 The MPAA police are on their way to your house.

Click the button is NOT the only to exit ! control-alt-del keys should bring up task manager. Shut off the offending program.

You can also Shut down Windows or even just turn off the computer's power.

Here's a useful little tip... always pay attention to the LAST 3 CHARACTERS after the last PERIOD/DOT in a file name. They make up something called the Filename "Extension". More on this "Extension" concept in a bit. It?s important to understand that "i'manidiotwhodoesn'tknowwhathe'sdoing.mpg.exe" is not a video, it's a program. See the cute little ".exe" on the end? That tells your PC that the file is a program therefore it attempts to execute the code, whatever that may be. If it was just ".mpg" the PC would load the associated video player.

Those 3 magic characters after the last period of the filename actually mean something in a Windows OS, so they tend to be fairly important. It's the way Windows determines what program to use when it opens the file. That?s the whole point of having the extension in the first place. When you're dealing with new/unknown files, you should watch out for these extensions as well:

.vbs

.bat

.ini

.cab

.reg

.dll

I?m sure there are more potentially dangerous ones out there, but I can?t think of any right now. The important thing to remember is that Windows doesn?t double up on extensions. There?s no such thing as ?coolpornpicture.jpg.vbs? for example. Never trust any file that is named like that; it?s always a tr:hmmm:r />

:hmmm:

I remember reading somewhere that there are some extremist religious groups in the US that are targeting P2P porn downloaders by posting fake porn downloads. Apparently they have nothing better to when they aren't trying to shove their beliefs down other peoples throats.

Maybe this is an example???
