Kid Death
I want to change the default folder icons to some new ones. From what I've gathered so far at this board is that I'm supposed to use ResHack to hack into the shell32.dll file but what exactly do I do? Thanks in advance. -Bruce
smaulz
Open shell32.dll with reshacker. On the left will be a bunch of "folders". Open the one that says "Icon Groups". There should be a bunch of numbered folders now. Click on numbers 4 & 5, (not at the same time, do one, then the other.) On the right, it should show you the default ugly yellow folders. Right click on the little icon under the numbered folder and click "change resource" browse to the icon you want to change it to, and then do the same to the other one. (4 then 5) when you're done, click "file" and then "save as" then save it to something like c:/windows/temp/shell32.dll. When you're all done, throw in the 'ol winxp disk and reboot the computer. Start the rescue console or whatever you call it, and copy the new shell32.dll to c:windowssystem32. reboot, all done... :) DISCLAIMER: I pretty much pulled this outta memory, so some minor details may be incorrect, but it should be close enough to get the job done. Hope it helps!
Duckie
Or, instead of going thru all that trouble, only to have Windows replace the edited file thru 'Windows File Protection', find a copy of Desktop Architect somewhere on the net. With it, you can change the icons, as well as all other aspects of the OS(even Logo's and web folders in Win98). Then, just save each theme so you dont have to go thru all the motions again. This makes it easy for people like me who switch themes CONSTANTLY. Instead of 'res-hack-ing' to death my shell32.dll(which can affect system stability if you dont know what your doing) everytime I want a diff' look, I just open the theme file...it accepts and saves in windows *.theme format too. it also imports iPhile, Motif, and ICL formats. Ok, enough already...I sound like a commercial... Duckie
