In a recent blog post, Parallels detailed the latest version of its virtualization software called Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac, which allows users on the Apple platform to run Windows and Linux applications without having to make use of the built-in BootCamp feature.
The new update comes packed with a slew of improvements, most notably integrates support for the Apple TouchBar which was introduced in 2016. The new interface replaced the top row of function keys in certain versions of the MacBook Pro with a touch screen, which allows for the user of macOS to allocate settings and shortcuts to it for easy access.
In Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac, it will allow you to map the taskbar of Windows or, any other shortcut or command within the virtual instance to this new interface. It expands on the current support by Apple for the operating system in BootCamp, which only displays the standard function keys. You will also be able to secure your preferences with TouchID, preventing unauthorized changes.
Beyond general stability and performance enhancements, the developer noted that unlike previous versions of the software, it will allow you to quickly purchase a version of Windows from within the installer if you do not have a copy, streamlining the set-up process. You will also be notified if Windows is in the process of configuring updates, in case you want to suspend or shut down the virtual instance, preventing possible corruption of system files. Parallels 13 for Mac will also include support for the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators update which is currently in Preview.
The software will include support for the upcoming macOS 10.3 High Sierra update, which is scheduled to launch later this year. Beyond that, gaming support will be improved further with Parallels' ongoing integration of the OpenGL 3.0 API, which allows for smoother gameplay in titles such as Wolfenstein: The New Order, RAGE, and Northgard.
