What cable would I need to....

Recommended Posts

nuka_t, check your info man. To run from PC to PC without a router or switch you need a crossover cable. I does this stuff all day at my computer shop and have to answer this question about 10 times a day. If I'm wrong, then the two computers my kids have must be talking to each other telepathically. Thanks for trying to help though, everybody here appreciates all the help they can get sometimes.

Not trying to be mean or anything, just wanting to clear something up...

NO you do not want a crossover cable. that is the exact opposite of what you want. hooking 2 computer directly from one ethernet port to another you need a cat5 noncrossover cable. if your hooking up to router or hub then u should get crossover. god i spent so much trying to figure this out when making a home network.

Edit:lol @weasel.

I have always used straight cat5e cables when setting up a network and have always thought that crossover cables were used for direct connections, but I could be wrong. My entire home network is set up with straight-through cables and have never had any problems whatsoever.

EDIT: Sorry, jediweasel beat me to it. Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Keep the faith fellow network brethren...

It is written in the Book of IEEE, chapter 5, verse 13-15 "Where the router meeteth the pc, shall a crossover not be present but the sinless straight through shall rise and conquer then bandwidth. But the clash of opposing ethernet forces shall be smiteth by the sword of the Spirit of the Crossover. And the people shall rejoice and fileshare."

um no, a crossover cable is for when you DON'T use a router. If you want to connect two NIC's directly, you need a crossover cable.
