markwolfe Veteran Posted January 22, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 22, 2004 I have a co-worker that actually went out and bought Lindows. He actually enjoys it! (I was surprised, too) He is full of RAVE reviews of it. It was painless for him to install and all of his equipment worked with it right out of the box. He has never gone into the shell, so it passes the "noob" test fairly well, I think. ;) Using Lindows has shown him that there are good alternatives to Windows. And, right now, he is working on trying a more Linux-like Linux distro (Fedora). I used to have a negative opinion of the Lindows OS, but right now I am going to download the free version and see for myself what it is like. It doesn't make sense for me to knock something I have never even seen in action.

markwolfe Veteran Posted January 22, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 22, 2004 wtf no im not reading 4 pages of crap to find a link , its not at front or end where is i t? Errr... If you can't spend time to scan through four links of an article, then you probably aren't really wanting to look at Lindows, either... :pinch: The shortcut is to lindows.com/buyit, and turn in a coupon with the code: IReadOSNews You will have to register to Lindows.com. They will recommend the Click-n-Run (you don't have to sign up for this, I didn't) on trail- charging after the trial is up. And you will need to provide credit card info. I am pretty sure that you will not even go there via the shortcut..... :pinch:

markwolfe Veteran Posted January 22, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 22, 2004 Damn, you need to sign up first (address, creditcard, etc, etc, etc). :( I used a throwaway email addy. My home addy is a matter of looking in the phone book, so not a big deal to me. And it is illegal for them to bill, unless I authorize it, so I was careful to avoid things like their Click-N-Run! ;)

LordHatrus
Yerp. I'm with you.... wouldn't touch it.... I mean, it's noobier than Lycoris. Or Mandrake. Or Redhat. Or Fedora. Gentoo and Slackware rule... But, I would never give my mother an operating system like that... But I might just give her something like Lycoris, because... well..... yeah...... remember the (either Billy Gates or Mr. Jobs) quote, "The macintosh is the only computer I'd buy my mom" or something like that...... Of course, I'm trying to phase my own mother into Fedora right now.... Just keeping out of the shell.... lol Still, I wouldn't even give her Lindows... It's got all the noob-ish drawbacks of windows along with the drawbacks of linux (Not having support for certain apps that don't work in WINE, and the like, along with support for weird and unusual off-brand name hardware) edit: I would never ACTUALLY get my mom a macintosh. Ever. Ever ever ever. :)

markwolfe Veteran Posted January 22, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 22, 2004 Well, duh! Anyone who has ever installed a "real" Linux before is NOT the target of Lindows! :pinch: This is for the exact types of noobs you are describing. Stating that Lindows is too noob-ish is not a statement on Lindows as a whole, but on its fitness for you as your OS. My opinions were similar to yours, but a co-worker of mine (with little PC experience) had such a fantastic review of it, that I wanted to see it for myself. If I recall, no one is forcing anyone to download this...

scotland
I just stuck the link up for anyone interested. I've browsed their site etc and it does not appeal to me personally but, it's free as in beer. Don't know how long it will last but if it gives someone an intro and liking for Linux i'm happy. Personally I use Fedora Core 1 (with up to the minute kernel and patches) and downloaded Lindows. Just for a look when I get time to burn the CD and find a partition to slap it on. Nothing wrong with that, or what lindows.com is trying to achieve. OK bitchers. Dougie. Glasgow, Scotland.
MG-Cloud
Hey thanks for the link :) I do read osnews, but I skimmed over that link not realizing that there was a nice little treat inside :p I've always wanted to try out Lindows and maybe let my computer-illiterate mother try it out. I might set this up for her and dual boot it with mandrake ;D
MG-Cloud
Hmm I've gotten to #23, then when I refreshed, it said there was an error... then I was #1, and it said there was an error with my download again. Am I just extraordinarily unlucky, or is this a problem with other people too?
Midnight Mick
No, I had to do this several times... I finally got it though. Not tested it as yet though, I'm gonna leave that for tommorow. :D
