U.N. nuclear watchdog chief says Iran playing by the rules

VIENNA (Reuters) - The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Monday Iran was abiding by the rules set out in a nuclear accord it signed with six world powers in 2015, after Washington suggested it was not adhering to the deal.

The State Department must notify Congress every 90 days of Iran’s compliance with the deal. The next deadline is October and U.S. President Donald Trump has said he thinks by then the United States will declare Iran non-compliant.

Yukiya Amano, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Iran had not broken any promises and was not receiving special treatment.

“The nuclear-related commitments undertaken by Iran under the (deal) are being implemented,” he said in the text of a speech to a quarterly meeting of the IAEA’s 35-member Board of Governors.

Most sanctions on Iran were lifted 18 months ago under the deal and, despite overstepping a limit on its stocks of one chemical, it has adhered to the key limitations imposed on it.

As long as they keep following the rules (and nothing is being done under the table) then kudos to them. But seeing as they've burned the international community several times it's hard to imagine people will just start trusting them now. They have to earn it, and at least for now it seems like they're on the correct path to doing so.

It's almost like they've already decided Iran WILL be non-compliant, isn't it?  Hopefully, the UN will ignore America's Iran paranoia and keep the deal going.

Looks like another international agreement that the United States will not honor, and it's people will say that "Iran is bad."

Pretty much. And Washington would have to prove they are not compliant. I don't see it happening but hey, never thought Trump would be president either. UN says they are compliant, let them be.

Trump considering options other than scrapping the Iran nuclear deal

President Trump is considering options that fall short of entirely scrapping the Iran nuclear deal, according to administration officials.

Trump is interested at reopening the accord to address what he sees as its shortcomings, the sources said.

The officials said Trump is specifically...

Looking to address the "sunset provision" that allows some curbs on Iran's nuclear program to expire, and to address Iran's ballistic missile program, which was not included in the original deal

Considering an option of giving European signatories a 90-day window to agree to renegotiations (It's not clear what would happen should the deadline pass)

Saw a video yesterday where the other members who signed the deal said Iran was compliant and they said something about keeping the deal if the US decided to scrap it. I'll see if I can find the video later.

Yea read that earlier. And Iran says there will be no negotiations.  Was hard enough to get this deal. Trump should just let it go.

Basically every other country, including people from the US administration, have said that Iran is complying with the deal.

So then why open his mouth about it? Because he knows nothing of what he talks about, until after he makes himself look stupid and then someone has to explain to him what he was talking about.

That's probably because Benjamin Netanyahu is the one behind him pulling his strings on this issue. Israel has been the one pushing for just about anything against Iran.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Trump CANNOT scrap this deal, because it's not a US/Iran deal. It's an internationally brokered deal of which the US is merely ONE of the signatories.

They can pull out of it, sure. Trump likes to drop things done during Obama's tenure simply because they were done during Obama's tenure; but that doesn't abrogate the entire deal and it's time the rest of the world told Trump that to his face.
