BTallack
I use a 3M Precise Mousing Surface for my mouse, simply for the traction provided by the bumpy surface. It's great for working on graphics and layout, so I imagine it would be good for gaming.

MaddogMDD
Use a piece of paper. Just tape it in two corners to your desk. Boom, amazingly smooth mousing surface, virtually free. Just replace it every so often when it gets dirty. Your friends will be in awe of your GhettoPad. I've done this for three years myself.

Amazingly cheap, easily replaceable, fully functional and you can tell when it becomes dirty easily ( if using white paper ). Don't waste your money buying a mousepad. Drimo
I use a soft mouse pad with my optical mouse because I'm accustomed to the feel of using a mousepad. For some reason, using any mouse without a pad doesn't feel right to me.
