Your Opinion On This Letter

Recommended Posts

As a male who has been forced to shave upon many occasions, I've never fully understood why I must do so. One cannot hide a gun in a beard too well. You can hardly label them as unprofessional considering teachers in our facility, the only professionals in the classroom, have been known to sport goatee?s and beards. Distracting? I could hardly think so, amidst the various signs in the hallways, giant, flashy banners dedicated to our sports teams and a large amount of female students with visible undergarments. I usually have little objection to following rules, as long as I can see a good reason for having them. However, forcing me to keep my chin free of facial hair serves no purpose whatsoever in my eyes. There is nothing disruptive about it in the learning environment, nor is it a threat to the student body's safety. I would be more than happy to see this rule abolished.

It's a letter to our school paper, which I write for, about our current shaving rule. All facial hair aside from 'neatly trimmed mustaches and sideburns down to the earlobe,' and we're attempting to get the rule changed to allowed neatly kept goatee's and possibly beards. We've been trying to setup a meeting with the administration and so far they've been ignoring us. I'm writing this letter to try and get more people motivated and active in this attempt to change the rule. Opinions?

sounds ok to me. you'll need to find some other precedents for what you want to do.

One thing I have painfully learned all the way through my education, is that you can almost never:

1. Beat the system

2. An if you can its not worth all of the amazing hasstle it causes

they may be ignoring you because how far people will take it. For instance, instead of having a neatly shaved goatee, some people insist on growing patches of hair on their chin and letting it grow 2+ inches long... after awhile you look hideous.

Or an untrimmed patchy mustache can look "trashy" too... not trying to offend anybody, but the way you present yourself is VERY important, and there are ALOT of people (young and old) who do not present themselves in a clean and upkept manner. There is a difference between and full kept beard, and an unsightly untrimmed patchy "goatee".

I don't think there's ANYTHING wrong with your school wanting to keep a good image.

Thanks, that does sound better.

I go to Hoover High School, North Canton, Ohio. Only school in the county with this rule.

It is 100% public schooling, no ta private school.

my highschool didnt allow any facial hair unless u were a senior, and it had to be neat. it was a private jesuit high school (Fordham Preparatory School). if you were a underclassmen caught with facial hair, the deans would put their hand on ur chin and pull the hair, the amount of hair that came out is the amount of days of detention you would get. i had stubs (i dont like having long facial hair, and stubs make me look s3xxy  ) so there wasnt any hair they could pull. it was funny watching people get caught lol. but thank god im out of there, it was also a all boys school.

now im in college with lots of girls mmmmmmm :shifty:

Personal hygiene is often considered some degree of reflection of mental state. There are ideals that thought be as neat, clean, clear, etc. as possible for many reasons.

Generally speaking, high schools in particular have enough issues as it is without folk doing "whatever they feel like". There is also some degree of courtesy to others when it comes to reasonable care for hygiene and such.

Overall, stereotypically speaking, those who go unshaven tend to do so as a reflection of lack of general mental "discipline" as well. It can also be taken as a sign of poor hygiene in general, accurately or not.

Personally, I find daily shaving rough on the skin, but anyone who lives as such in most professional environments finds themselves viewed as unprofessional (ignoring well-kempt beards and mustaches and so on when appropriate).

Anyway, ultimately, high school isn't the place to be growing beards or whatever. If you want to go unshaven in college at times, go ahead, as mental capability matters even more, and budgets and time can get quite tight.

In the meantime, battling hygiene/shaving issues in high school is fairly pointless, and does no one any favors if they desire to work in any number of professional settings after high school (especially if they don't go to college for even a brief while).

Suppose you can battle such things if you want and see what you learn, but if you're in a high school where there's already a policy for whatever reason, it's doubtful you'll successfully fight against it, even if it is just perhaps superficial beliefs regarding what facial hair can reflect and why in present day and age.

Suggest you save your unshaven days for the weekends, and save your fights for intellectual issues that matter, like corrupt elections, censorship, etc. Administration will indeed probably ignore you barring for some fluke reason you getting more than 50% of males fighting the policy repeatedly. In the meantime, have fun if you want to spend your time battling such.
