Phone/Internet/TV Plan

Can someone describe exactly what they do? I know for different companies, areas, plans, they do different things.

We are using Spectrum in this sense. (Previously Time Warner Cable)

My Mom wanted to buy a Internet/TV/Phone plan. As ATT&T was ######## us over. And we cancelled our Cable TV a few years ago.

Anyway, through that...

The way "I" understand it:

They give you a new Modem. Along with a TV Box.

Modem will include all 3 things, phone jack, internet, and TV.

Internet and TV over the cable. And VOIP on the phone.

This correct? Because my Mom is going bonkers about this.

CURENTLY we have only Internet with them. We use our own modem. Our TV is hooked up to an antenna up in our attic. And phone is routed to our phone line. (whatever the hell that means)

So is my understanding about this true? If this sound likes ######, please ask....

I do not know your specific company, but with Xfinity (Comcast) you lease a gateway, which is a modem,VOIP, and router. For TV they supply you a box that connects to the TV via HDMI. Then each month the bill shows the price of everything (internet speed,TV package, etc.) and then it is discounted (bundled). I would suspect that every company will be very similar in what they provide. If your mother is looking to save money by buying a package deal, you might suggest to her instead that she look into BasicTalk for phone service, it is VOIP and is >$10/month, you can buy it at Walmart. Since you stated that you already own the modem, I can not think of any reason to have to quit using it, and it most likely will be cheaper overall to simply add TV service from your provider to your current setup.

Well, I'll find out when the cable guy comes over to set up all the stuff. (why my Mom can't do it herself is beyond me)

I'll report back after he gets here on Tuesday...

They will provide you with whatever equipment is necessary for installation, there could be fees and charges, but they will bring everything in order to have you setup with the plan you chose.

every install is different regardless if it is with the same company or not.  I could give you a few typical scenarios, and one may be correct or all will be wrong.

Dealing with xfinity, you will either get 2 modems (models are the same/features are the same) one for internet, one for phone, you will get 1 modem to handle phone and internet, or you will get nothing and are beat.

cable tv, each tv can get its own cable box, no tvs get their own cable box, or nothing is done for tv.

Xfinity is fun when it comes to installation....I hate crapcast or comcrap, they are by far the crappiest.  They strive to be the best of the worst.

Thanks, sc302. I know we are getting a TV Box and a new modem. Exactly what else, I have no idea.

OK, guys. It's all set up for us. Took him maybe 1.5 hours to fully install. IDK what exactly he did, but hey, it all works. :D

So, he installed a new TV Box, as expected.

He also said that since I had my own modem (not just one of theirs), he added a new phone modem. So he just made a splitter between my modem and the phone modem.

My previous speeds were 17 down, 1 up. But now...

That's the lowest plan with the Internet/Phone/TV bundle.

Typically Spectrum's base speed is 60 Mbit.  For some areas in the previously-TWC-areas, it is 100 Mbit.

Are you on their special financial plan for low-income families?  I thought it used to be 15 Mbit.

Are your speed tests via wire or wireless connection?

TWC was changed to Spectrum just a couple months ago.

I dunno what plan we got. My Mom bought it, not I.

Test was via a wired connection. I can test with my tablet or phone if you want. But I think it will be slightly lower.

But, the speed i am at, it suits me...

Odd... when I test other servers, I get 70/5. Interesting...

Different servers will have different results. Load on the servers and/or your network will effect the test.

There are a lot of factors that can negatively effect the tests. You are better to try several servers and several services.

Yeah I knew it.  I never heard of 30 Mbit from Charter/Spectrum.
