Airport Extreme Query

Recommended Posts

i've almost got enough money to go and order my iBook, but i just have a quick query over airport extreme and networking in general.

I already have three PCs in the house, all networked using a simple switch. If i was to replace the switch with a wireless router that had four RJ45 sockets too, which wasn't neccessarily an apple one, would the iBook i'm going to buy work with it?

The router would be a 802.11g router, this one... http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...oduct_uid=52244

I don't know if it supports 802.11b though, and could anyone tell me whether the iBook would be able to connect to it?

Or does anyone suggest a better ADSL router, that is also a 10/100 LAN switch.

Thanks

i keep reading through the airport extreme descriptions and others, and it's not clear whether it can connect using 802.11g unless if it a airport extreme hub, and since i'm not sure whether the router i want to buy does 802.11b, what if i'm stuck and it can't connect?

Anyone know for sure?

As far as I know you can't fit an Airport extreme into an iBook.. at least, the socket is different on mine...

But usually, if you get anything that supports 802.11b your iBook will connect to it. I'm running a Wireless-G access point right now. (Linksys)

yeh, i was thinking of jusy buying a 802.11b router, but when you order the ibook you can choose the airport extreme card, its the g4 ibook, don't know if that's different

Yes, it is. My Airport Extreme card in my PowerBook works with both my Airport Extreme Base Station and my Linksys Wireless-G Access Point at the highest speeds.

Yea, the iBook G4 is the first iBook to support AE. The iBook G3 doesn't.

802.11b and 802.11g are open standards. You're essentially asking the same thing as if a Linksys Router will work with a NetGear WAP card. Apple follows the same spec as everyone else (well, they jumped the gun with 802.11g and got it to market with a slightly incompatible version of the protocol, but that's been fixed up in firmware updates). You should be perfectly fine :)
