OS X 10.3 boot screen?...

Recommended Posts

At last count, I think there were 37 mac viruses. And I think the number affecting OSX were not even in the double digits. This is compared, of course, to the tens of thousands of viruses on the PC... ;)

As for sleeping, it's what I do as well. Keeps my uptime high. I'm on 32 days thus far :)

IIRC there were around 32 million Mac users, with only about 10 million of those users actually having upgraded to MacOS 10, either through an OS upgrade or by purchasing a new Mac.

On the other hand. . .

There are around 240-300 million PCs, and those are just the ones running desktop versions of Windows. You also have to figure in 3 million Unix servers, 4 million Linux servers, 5 million NT/2K/2K3 servers, and 2 million Linux desktops.

Lets say that the sides were reversed, and Macs had the numbers in its favor. Guess what? That increased number of users familiar with Macs means an increased number of programmers just ready to ruin someone's day with a nasty piece of code.

*dives into flame-proof bunker* :ninja:

Edit: timdorr, I thought this might be funny. . . according to Netcraft: "The site home.timdorr.com is running Apache/1.3.27 (Win32) PHP/4.3.0 on Windows 2000"

Mac boot screens are 32bit color, much cooler than windows!

So what? ... as if... ppfff

Win supports 256 !!! . . . colors :punch: :woot:

Maybe to save power?

Do you realize how little power a Mac actually uses when it's in sleep mode? Probably not even enough to notice the difference on your power bill.

Actually, it's Windows XP, but netcraft doesn't know the difference yet. Since I take my iBook everywhere, it's not of much use to run my webserver off of it. Plus, I haven't bothered to developed my stats sig on Unix/BSD platform. Wouldn't be too troubling, though.

When I get my G5 (Apple better hurry and bump the PM specs!), expect that OS info to change ;)

I'd venture to say that even if it were reversed, virus programmers would still have a hard time to get into the system. Linux is pretty secure and doesn't have that many viruses. The one's it has aren't really even that effective. And I think with the programmer-centric nature of the OS, and the massive use of it as a server OS on the market would lead to the kinds of attempts that Mac would get if it were on top. Windows basically has a pretty crappy security model, so I blame it on Microsoft. :p

When mav mentioned the power saving, he was replying about the hotswap thingy not working between the burner and i don't recall what :D.

Or i may be wrong.

Yes, I think you are wrong, because his comment wouldn't make any sense in relation to my hot-swap problem.

I know, I run an XP Pro box that has a small web server on it. I was just pointing out that it was Windows. :)

Well, frankly I wasn't aware that all you had was an iBook. But anyway, good luck with the Mac server. Might I suggest a little of this and a little of that? :)

I don't know about that, I'd be more inclined to blame problems on MS users, not on Microsoft itself. Many MS Server admins cram for the MCSEs, go off, and get a job having barely any experience. Regardless, I think it is unwise to say that Linux and Unix are more secure, for the same reasons as for the Mac. The Linux/Unix market share is so small, that there aren't enough programmers working on producing deadly viruses for that market. I think it would be best to wait for that situation to come around before saying anything to that effect.
