MEMO.INC
80 % X+(X/4)=60 (4X/4)+(X/4)=60 5X/4=60 5X=240 X=240/5 X=48 IF 60=100% (48*100)/60=80 Edited January 23, 2004 by MEMO.INC

Poulet
80% 1/4 of 80% is 20% i.e. 48 mins have passed, 12 remaing, (12 is 1/4 of 48). [edit]bahh, you beat me to it, and yep, I did the same thing. Whoohoo Latin America - 1 Rest of the World - 0 [/edit]

dreamz Veteran Posted January 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2004 he just explained it to you. x = % played y = % remaining. x + y = 1 we know y = x/4 (specified in the problem) x + x/4 = 1 5x/4 = 1 x = 4/5 = 80%

ceminess
how did you get from HERE x + x/4 = 1 to HERE 5x/4 = 1 how did you get the 5?
Poulet
multiply everything by 4 then add the 4x + x, you get 5x then divide by 5 to get the x. i.e. x+ x/4 = 60 4x + x = 240 5x = 240 x=
MEMO.INC
how did you get fromHERE x + x/4 = 1 to HERE 5x/4 = 1 how did you get the 5? I exolained in my first post, X+(X/4)=60 (4X/4)+(X/4)=60 ------------------------- X=X 4/4=1 (4/4)*X=X (4X)/4=X
dreamz Veteran Posted January 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2004 thanks, memo.inc. you did well also. :) ceminess, it's just adding fractions except with an x there as well. 1 + 1/4 = 4/4 + 1/4 = (4 + 1)/4 = 5/
