Kasandoro
Get smoothwall at http://www.smoothwall.org. I use it and it's great so far. Also, have a look at M0n0wall at http://www.monowall.org. I'm using a pentium II 450, with 256MB of RAM and a 4.2GB hard drive, and it works fine. --Kas
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2004 Just curious here, but I took a look at that smoothwall site, and the system requirements. Does smoothwall run as a GUI app on the local machine? Or is it console only, and serve the admin pages out to configure on a remote PC? My follow-up to this is pure idle curiosity, but how low of a system can be used to serve as an HTTP/FTP proxy for 10 PCs, as in the original poster's example? That is, could I use a '486 PC running a text-only Linux system with the latest 2.6 kernel and still perform farily well?

markwolfe Veteran Posted January 23, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 23, 2004 Yes, I know it can be set up as a proxy server, although I have never done it myself. However, a quick Google for the right keywords shows some "how to" pages. :)
