They should put an Adults Only rating on any game with guns, killings, bad language or nudity.

Its not to stop kids from getting hold of them, it's to stop people complaining when their mentally unstable children who they neglected for most of their life from bitching when they go and do something psychotic.

Well, the Havok physics engine is one of the greatest around, but I'm not going to pat Valve on the back because they had the moolah to license it.

They don't give the game a rating, or claim it is for everyone, because then Angry Mothers With Pitchforks? will rip 'em a new one, claim that their games are the source of all societies shortcomings, and have the game banned here in Australia (won't someone please think of us Australians!!!!!)

I think that Doom 3 will far excel Half Life 2. I will present 3 arguments for this.

1) Half Life derived from Quake 2 (Id) technology, and pieces of Quake are supposedly still present in Half Life 2. I just can't see it been a "next generation" game. It may have some fancy shader effects, but I don't think it will be any different from any other game on the market. The scripted style of Half Life 1 has now become a no-no in the industry.

2) Half Life 2 fans biggest attack on Doom 3 is saying that the monsters look like they are made out of clay. Personally, I think they look uber realistic, but even if they look like they're made out of clay doesn't make it a bad thing. We are pushing for a photo-realistic game technology, and we are right on the threshold but are yet to push over it. Grand Theft Auto 3 tried to look photo-realistic, but despite been a good game wasn't that realistic. Vice City instead opted for a "cartoon" look, and it looked way better. Sometimes the division between fantasy and reality can make or break a game.

3) Doom 3 is the engine to be used for the upcoming Quake IV...this means that in Id's eyes that this is equivalent to their next generation Quake engine. The quake engine has to be one of the most succesful game engines ever...off the top of my head, it has been used for Quake, Quake II, Quake III, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Medal Of Honour, Enemy Territory, Star Trek Voyager Elite Force, Soldier Of Fortune, Alice, Jedi Knight II, Soldier Of Fortune 2, once Duke Nukem Forever, and many others...as well as been one of the earliest mod friendly engines. Id is by far an industry leader, so I'm not going to discount it because of a couple of pretty bink videos.

QUOTE (ANova @ Jan 25 2004, 00:32)

"HL2 has a much more involved storyline, is more realistic and hasa better physics engine.  >"

Please explain the bold part.

Download the Half-Life 2 E3 trailers and see for yourself (I can't remember the name of the one where they demonstrate the abilities of the physics engine). The physics engine in HL2 makes the enviroment seem more realistic and alive, compared to the bolted-down objects in Doom.

The Havok physics engine is one of the best if not the best physics engine out atm. Having played both Doom 3 and HL2 I know from experience what each has to offer. Please no references to me being a warez monkey or any other type of cynical description. I'm merely trying them out to get a feel for what to expect. I also plan on buying both.

As for realism, Doom 3 has fantasticly detailed textures and lighting, that I admire. Along with the very dark atmosphere id managed to accomplish which helps give the game more life. But indeed, one of the maps in the HL2 leak showing a downtown area has such realistic textures that the asphalt and trees looked almost like they were out of a photo. Glass also shatters realistically with individual breakaway points depending on where you hit it, much better then anything i've seen in the past.

Well, the trailer for DOOM 3 looks cool. But you will probably have to dish out big bucks for a good graphics card to run the game at a decent rate.

The only problems with the physics I've seen in this trailer is in two places; Where the monsters break through the wall - the wall drops too fast and hence appears to be made of a block of polystyrene and not metal/concrete; And where the enemy with the big gut falls down really quickly from a standing position - when he hits the ground he is static, ie, not moving at all - I would think the limbs would go all floppy and hence his leg would not stay half up (would be too heavy to stay in that position). Otherwise looks like I'm going to enjoy Doom once again :woot:

I hope it has DX8 support ...

Chode, you forgot Daikatana.

Oh yeah....damn there are a lot of Quake licensed games :

Anyone know a good list for them? I searched far and wide but to no avail.

Wooties, post #200>

Perhaps not, OpenGl (at least in my experience) has always been faster than D3D.

I'm sure neither of HL2 or Doom 3 is OpenGL. If I remember right, OpenGL use to "strech" the texture. That's why you can see bigger pixels in low res than in high res.

HL2 is DX9 and Doom 3 is OGL.

Im looking forward to both, i just played the original doom again, it was kind of funny.

I am pretty sure that both the Doom 3 and the Source engines are going to be amazing for games, they will both be licensed to other companies, probably depends wich one has more appealing features, if someond rater have shaders, then they will use Source, if the want real mapping, then they use Doom 3.

They are both suposed to have amazing physics. Carmack and his team spent many hours just making it so that glass brakes realistically, the reason that they made it so that if you shoot through a window that leads to the outside, the reason you dont die is because having to make the calculations of all the glass being sucked out we be near impossible, and if it was so stupid little thing, it would ruin the mood.

In the end, Im gonna buy both.
