game idea

Im starting development on a game but I need to hammer out a few rough edges before I start anything major.

Basically im trying to mix a first person (and 3rd if you want) shooter type game with an mmorpg mix to it. Itll be the same basic movements as the latest gta but placed in a massively multiplayer world. Like in gta you get to do missions and with each mission you complete you get expirience points. after you reach certain levels with your expirience you get points to add to attributes that you have.

which is the first place I want input on. so far I have the following attributes: speed, strength (you can carry more stuff, stronger melee hits), endurance (run longer), life, and carisma(you can do harder missions and get better guns from shops). Im looking for a few more. what could I add?

A few more features would be drivable cars with other players in the same car. You can make a clan and buy a house which you can modestly customise, your clan house would basically be a place to keep money/guns and would be a respawn point instead of the main respawn area.

The idea of the game is to have levels but also keep it so that a newb to the game still has a chance against a stronger character based on their actual physical skill not just on game abilities. PvP will be a good part of the game, there will be no kill areas and killing areas.

so my second question is basically, is this a game that you would be interest in? input is welcome.

I once had a good idea for a game, or at least a mod.

I'm currently hooked watching "The Invisible Man", and I keep thinking of the cloak you could install in Deus Ex. I keep picturing an infilitration game like Deus Ex, but you're like "the invisible man" and you can "quicksilver" other objects and see in that funky spectrum of light and you don't "uncloak" when you fire a gun but the gun is very visible to others when you are carrying it. Plus if you use your "cloak" too often you don't turn visible again but instead you go "quicksilver mad" and it's near impossible to aim guns and movement is erratic and vision is messed up (like in Deus Ex when you get drunk or take some of that drug).

What do ya's reckon? Do I need to get outside mroe :huh:

I have all the intentions of doing this :) ive already got other smaller games under my belt. I have some sponcers for the main server and everything. Itll just take a really long time to make. Im diong this completely from scratch and im not a huge team of programmers soooo dont expect HL2 graphics but im hoping to get a little beyond q3 graphics, im gonna use DX9.

But none of you guys put in your input to the first question I asked, I need more abilities you can update.

i think you should start off an existing engine. but thats just my idea.

anyway.

i thought about those attributes, but i can't really think of anything. perhaps aim? (the more aim you have the less recoil and such?).

cant think of anything else right now..

anyway dude, i wanna wish you good luck...

and by all means, beta and alpha testing :D even engine testing :D i'd be glad to. maybe even mapping.. :)

edit: o and, since i understand this is gonna be an mmo, is it gonna be free to play or pay2play ?

I dont want to start off of existing engines anymore. its my turn to make the engine. The gun aiming thing was tossed around but shot down. that would give a newbie to the game a huge disadvantage against other players and make easy missions that much harder.

as for the payments. im planning on making it free to players. since the cost of servers are being covered by the sponcers and I cover my own web usage, I see no reason to charge anyone. Besides, one of the reasons so many ppl dont play mmo games is becausee they charge. I know thats why I dont.

Best of luck to you.

Perhaps you should have Endurance also affect how many hit you can take before you fall to the ground and start crying (not actually killing you though), and have to crawl away..

That would add some unparalleled realism to your project.

Not to jinx you dude, but not many independent game projects ever get too far. Just vist www.moddb.com (I know they are mods, but it is comparable)and view how many there haven't been updated in...well, years.

In fact, the only half decent independent game project I have ever seen (Which was built from the ground up) was Dink Smallwood.... geez that was a fun game.

Yes I know most independent projects fail. But Ive already done 2 and one I still regularly update and has life in it. Ive actually got quite a bit lined up for this project so im fairly confident I can do this. Besides, Programming is my life, If I cant do this. Ill consider myself a failure

here an idea from the game mafia, (juz got off playing it again) how about like Thief thing, like the higher skill in thievery the better cars u can steal :)

sounds badass man, but do you have any experience in the game making buisness?

edit: check ur site, looks like u do. Good stuff man, and good luck, creating a whole engine is gonna be hard and tiring.

You dont really steal cars. Ive planned not to really have pedestrians unless its part of a mission because it would make pings alot higher. so I dont think theivery would work too well... actually well have cars lying around so i guess unless you have a certain level of theivery you cant break into it. i get it now. thanks that works great.
