does anyone know of an equivilent of garageband for Windows? in terms of price, interface ease of use, and quality? or any good ideas for mixing applications whatsoever? (for windows XP)

and the reason i ask is because...like the iPod, just because apple puts a pretty, simplistic face on an existing product and Markets it to no end, is it worth buying a mac to get garageband instead of just buying a similar application for the Windows PC?

(for the iPod...i would say its worth buying an iPod over other mp3 players because of its style and ease of navigation)

I've heard there is an acid version that's pretty darn good and fruityloops studio gets some pretty solid reviews, but I can't think of anything selling for $40 that compares. ($40 because thats the cheapest way to get GarageBand: bundled with iLife). I'm sure someone with a PC and Windows can point out some better examples though.

At the $100+ price point there is some pretty good stuff - or so I've heard - but I can't really speak authoritively on the subject.

Is it worth buying a Mac just for garageband? No. But I think that GarageBand + iLife + iDVD + iPhoto + iMove are pretty compelling if you're into making home movies with your computer.

Combine with Keynote, OmniGraffle, Office X (virus free Microsoft Office) and a few other mac-exclusive applications + Mac OS X and I think you can make a pretty strong case that buying a Macintosh is a good way to spend money for a lot of people.

Sony (Sonic Foundry) Acid Is about the closest program I can think of. Although it only shares some of the same built in features.
