64 bit vs 32 bit

Recommended Posts

I thought this very interesting

The only benchmark I've ever seen to pit 32 bit mathematics and 64 bit (very relevant with the release of the Athlon 64)

Remember in the following benchmark that lower is better:

Of course, benchmarks do so performance gains when using AMD's 64 bit architecture, maybe there's more redesign of their architecture besides another 32 bits.

What do zips have to do with Games, excuse my ignorance. And also, aren't 64bit cpus built for servers? Not necessarily for home use or gaming use? Correct me if I'm wrong.

that test compare performance on Sun Ultra 5 workstation, and absolutly not representative of Athlon64 or Intel's 64bit cpus.

64bit cpus can have greate advantage to games and other multimedia applications.

Unless I'm mistaken, it evaluates whether or not 64 bit mathematics does have any speed gains over 32 bit mathematics.

And yanman, 3D games make extremely heavy use of mathematics. In fact, mathematical logic is the base for most (if not all) programming languages.

but implementation of 64bit in Sun Ultra 5 cpu is very different from Athlon64. Sun is sparc architecture, while athlon is x86..so for all we know it can be 4x faster or slower than x86 32bit

The only real advantage to 64 bit besides slightly better performance per clock cycle is it gets rid of the 4 GB barrier for ram. Yes it can also make a big difference for games considering most are cpu intensive.

It may seem abstracted from practical application in the game industry, but there is a good point here... that more memory is needed per operation to store values in 64 bit. Good thing it does break the 4gig memory limit.
