MulletRobZ
Greetings. Just today, I swapped my CD-ROM for a DVD-ROM. However, I can't seem to be able to access the Terminator 3 disk (legal DVD). What scripts do I need to run in order to get the DVD-ROM to work properly? Also, it would be nice if I can find hardware information on all devices connected so I can find out where my QuickCam and TI Graph Link USB are connected to. Any prompt response would be grateful since I'd be stumped trying to type this info on Google.
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 25, 2004 What distro are you using? What program(s) have to tried to use to play the DVD? Do other DVDs play?
MulletRobZ
Slackware 9.0 and I tried Xine. I don't think any of the DVD's will work if T3 doesn't. Maybe Xine needs to be reinstalled?
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 25, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 25, 2004 (edited) Does xine have CSS decryption out of the box? I know that since the DVDs are encrypted, to play them you will need to decode them. This was in contention for being illegal by an interpretation of the DMCA here in the US, but this link seems to indicate that the MPAA has decided to give up. I believe that this is an admission that decrypting is "fair use", or at least they concede that CSS is no longer a "trade secret" protected by the DMCA. Now maybe these apps can have DeCSS incorporated without any legal issues... EDIT: I just checked, and xine does not incorporate CSS handling out of the box. If you google for "xine css", the first link will show you how to get CSS capability. Plus, this should be legal now, since the prosecution has declined to continute the appeal and prosecution attack. The last verdict ruled against the MPAA, I believe. MulletRobZ
I don't know if CSS Decryption is enabled because I don't know how to find out. When I tried the T3 disk, I get this error saying "The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (eg: not disc in drive.) (Error reading NAV packet.)". More input errors are the following: audio_decoder: error, unknown buffer type: 01060000, 04000000, and 02000000. input plugin cannot open HRL (dvd:/)

MulletRobZ
You mean this link: http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~rjw57/xine/dvdnav.patch.gz However, running the patch by extracting the gz, moving the dvdnav.patch file to /usr/lib/xine, and then executing it with ./dvdnav.patch gives me errors. Where must I run this script, because I believe xine was installed via Slackware packages (TGZ), so I can't place it in the sources. MulletRobZ
Never mind. I found the proper DVD NAV and DVD CSS packages on LinuxPackages.net. Thanks for the info, though. ;)
