Blockbuster sued for porn on PG movie

WOODBURY, New Jersey (AP) -- A couple who says their 4-year-old daughter saw hard-core pornography on a PG-rated movie tape from Blockbuster has sued the video company.

The plaintiffs, who were not identified, said the footage appeared on a "Home Alone 3" tape rented April 7 from a Glassboro store.

The pornographic material allegedly appeared for 10 minutes after the movie credits for the 1997 film.

According to the lawsuit field in Superior Court, Blockbuster "had a responsibility and a duty to inspect, monitor and ensure the quality and propriety of all video products purchased by its customers."

Randy Hargrove, a spokesman for Dallas-based Blockbuster Inc., said Friday that the company does not carry X- or NC-17-rated movies, and depends on renters to return a tape "in the same condition it was given to them."

"Unfortunately there are those rare instances when someone will abuse that privilege and damage one of our tapes," he said.

 I watch the credits, if I'm curious about an actor's name, or I want to know the name of a song in the movie.

The lawsuit is totally stupid. Anyone can record crap on a video tape and Blockbuster shouldn't be expected to watch every tape returned for damages.

Who the hell still watches tapes, DVDs all the way...

Ah well regardless, im willing to be they get some money out of this, maybe then they will buy a DVD for themselves, and theyll never have to experience such trauma again :s

"PG -- "Parental Guidance Suggested. Some Material May Not Be Suitable For Children": The Rating Board applies this rating when the members believe the film contains themes or content that parents may find inappropriate for younger children. The film can contain some profanity, violence or brief nudity, but only in relatively mild intensity. A PG film should not include drug use."

The parents were obviously the one to rent the movie, so obviously they approved of its content for their child.

a lot of movies now are pg even though they are meant for children! Example, many kids wanted to see the movie Freaky Friday, and it's pg. it just comes down to what kind of movie it is.

if a movie has any kind of rated R or higher clip on it, anywhere on it, then there should be some sort of mention of it. what if the child was just dancing to the music during the credits? lots of kids do that, what parent EVER expects to find something like that on a movie that is rated pg!?

If anything, is unusual there would be 10 minutes plus of blank space after the credits (that thereafter allowed someone to tape whatever onto it). That blank space does add up in cost to whoever made the tapes initially.

Blockbuster can't be reasonably expected to test every movie rented for such things. Heck, someone could even stick such stuff in the middle when they rented something. People can rent DVD's if they want zero risk that someone's "added on" to their rental.

Can almost guarantee that particular tape's rental records are going to be reviewed and likely legally pursued though. If anything, Blockbuster can just pass along whoever's suing them to whoever violated their own rental agreement.

Can almost guarantee even more that Blockbuster has some general release of liability in their membership agreement to get them out of whatever's happened.

Dont rental tapes have some sort of blockage to stop you recording over them??? And I agree home alone 3 sucked (N)

It's simply the equivalent of the record tab having been physically removed (same thing you can do to your own home VHS and audio tapes).

All someone has to do is (temporarily, and intentionally) put a piece of scotch tape over it to make it recordable. In this case, some customer must have decided they'd get their kicks by intentionally recording stuff onto the end of the tape. Ha ha.

Thats pathetic, Blockbuster shouldnt get sued, the people who put the porn on their in the first place should get sued.

Of course they should be held accountable, but unless someone confesses you are not going to find out who did the "extra features".
