RH9 Freezes up!

Recommended Posts

I wanna switch to Red Hat 9 and put it on my 2nd HD. I have two HDs, 1 IDE and 1 SATA, i want it on my IDE. It freezes after detecting all the drives (including the CD-ROMS) and with Knoppix is gives me SCSI related errors and freezes after that on the initial screen with the background.

Ok... Have you run Linux on your box before? Or are the problems with RH9 and Knoppix your first times trying it and seeing these problems?

Some of the problem may be that you have incompatable hardware (possibly). Or that maybe the versions you are tying to install do not have the correct newer drivers for your SATA (maybe more likely).

I do not have SATA, but I am assuming (and this is a reasonable assumption) that SATA will be treated like SCSI, which would explain where Knoppix had a problem. (BTW, you didn't state which version of Knoppix you tried)

I would recommend maybe trying a new Mandrake distro (I would try the beta release of 10 that I think is available). This way you should have most of the latest software trying to work with your hardware. If that has a problem there, too, then you may just have a MB or other hardware that just doesn't work with Linux at this time...

[EDIT: by the way, your sig graphic is a bit wide... The rules state 550 pixels wide, but I understand that many people go wider... However, yours is wide enough to cause problems with word wrap with my preferred browser width. No biggie and I am not saying you need to change it just because I pointed out my issue, but if you get other complaints, you might want to look at a narrower version.]

yea i changed my sig. but here is what i was gonna do, i guess Red Hat 9 and the latest version of knoppix doesn't support SATA, so I was gonna unplug my SATA and try to install it, but i realized, my SATA has windows on that and if the bootloader doesn't detect my windows xp install, then that would be bad. i don't like windows, but i have too many apps and stuff that i really need to run. oh well, guess i gotta wait till RH10 for SATA support?

There will not be a RHL10.

RedHat released their home/hobby version of RedHat Linux to what's called Fedora now. http://fedora.redhat.com

Their Fedora Core 1 release is what would be considered RHL9.1 or RHL10. As a long-term RedHatter, I switched to Fedora Core at home, and it works well for me. Not sure if it supports SATA at this time, though... A quick google shows that the 2.6 kernel officially supports SATA, but also the latest 2.4 kernels have good (but apparently not complete support for SATA). Fedora may very well support your SATA, and it's a free download, so give it a try, and post your results here so others can find out what you experienced.

Fedora Core will not be the same as RH Enterprise editions. But it will be similar enough for you to learn on.

Once you are familiar with the "RedHat Way", you can download the higher RedHat versions from their FTP servers (I beleive). They will *not* have .iso files - they don't want to make it easy. But the code is there, and they say that you *are* welcome to download and install. You just cannot legally package it out and distribute it as their Enterprise software (you have to remove logos and such if you distribute)
