WiFi security camera

Recommended Posts

Hi.  I'm looking to try messing about with home security cameras.  What I would prefer to do is grab a (single for now, cheap for now) camera that comes without any fancy features but rather just connects to my WiFi network, allows me to access it via IP address and then deal with all the monitoring and so on over an app on my home server.  My aim here is to eventually get a few cameras, but retain control of the software myself.

Is this what's referred to as an "IP Camera"?

Software: You will find a ton of software projects on GitHub as people like to fool with these things over the years.

Hardware: strangely enough, the right forum to post this question would be networking as networking experts like @BudMancan offer great advice!

Your talking about a IP camera yes...  So software you could look at would be

https://www.ispyconnect.com/ or say https://www.zoneminder.com/

They have a list of camera's that work with it, etc..  Then when your ready to spend some money and do it correctly take a look at the stuff from unifi https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-video/unifi-video-camera-g3/

Seems really freaking pricey $300.. For what?

The new  G3 from unifi is $149 direct from them.. And its POE..   Why run a camera like that over wifi to be honest?

I don't see why would you look at those over the unifi stuff?

That is their "retail" price. As opposed to Ubiquiti which says "contact reseller". Anyway you can see on Amazon, Q-See vs Ubiquiti. I realize that's US pricing but if we're talking price comparison it should be relative.

As far as PoE, I guess it's just more options.  I mean, even with non-PoE, you still need power to the camera..

Ok so its 107$ on amazon... The unifi is 130 over at baltic https://www.balticnetworks.com/ubiquiti-unifi-3rd-generation-indoor-outdoor-ip-video-camera.html

That camera comes with a 30 ft power cord... What if you need power to be 40ft away ;)

look at the reviews on amazon ;)  I don't see why you would go with such a product when there is a well known maker with better camera at a few dollars more with better features..  If you were going to look at something other than unifi - why not say the armcrest stuff

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I01Z1M2/ref=psdc_14241331_t5_B06VV991CD

Cheaper.. Way better reviews..
