what do you think a goth is?

Recommended Posts

calling all neowins who either think of themselves as Goth, or whom believe they know what one is (ignoring historical referances to nomadic european tribes). I would be most interested in hearing your conceptions on the subject, as I think of myself as one, and would like to see how many agree with my personal view point, as shown in the "what is a goth" page of my website. merely something to leave running whilst I attend my lectures on microbiology today.

i believe a goth is an antisocial person who tends to focus on negative things in life (i.e. deliberately being pessimistic), death/suicidal, is depressed, can be catorgorised as having a lugubrious (gloomy, mournful) and bleak personality, is secluded in life and expresses themselves to the world by wearing dark makeup, decorating their rooms in dark/candle/with a witch-craft like genre, and listening to depressing songs which enhances suicide.

i honestly question why goths are themselves. is it another branch of depression, or are they themselves to look different? personally, i find them disturbing. :/

People dressed in all black all the time and hanging out in groups with other people doing the same. The photo on your website is a perfect example of a goth.

i tend to have a fair amount of respect for "goths" as they tend to keep themselves to themselves and are not agressive to others in the normal course of life... they are far less disruptive to society than the groups of "townies" that mug people and, to use a cliche, "loiter with intent". i find that goths are generally very friendly people and although i don't see where they're coming from in any way, and i'm intrigued as to their motivations, they're just another weird branch of society as far as i'm concerned... :)

Im a goth, but I dont do half the sh*t you said there. I think a goth is just a person who wants to be themselfs, dress like they want, listens to whatever music they want, not really in the mood for arguing about this, Ive done it with too many people in the past and I still hear the same immature remarks over and over.

I wouldn't agree with #2, goths in general aren't depressed and suicidal.

I think they are just trying to be different by wearing all black clothes, trying to make their own style whereas they're not different at all. By wearing the style of clothes they do (generally black) they just put themselves into a different stereotype... all goths look the same to me.

I'd say that goths are usually more open minded and tend to be more intelligent in that they ask why a lot more... the reason they become a goth really: 'why' should i go out in normal clothes and do what every else does...

if u get what i mean, if not i can't be bothered goin into more detail...

those immature remarks are stereotypical. it's what most non-goths think of goths.

i want to be myself. i dress however i want, i listen to a wide range of music. am i a goth?

how am i arguing? please cite one phrase or sentence which i said which may imply i'm suggesting an arguement.

I think south park series 7 episode 14 "Raisins" has a pretty good handle on goths.

Haha I loved that episode.

But anyways my definition of goth is this:

There is no definition. It's so loosely based and anyone can start acting "goth" or call themselve goth that it lost all meaning as a word to me.

I've knwon people that dress the stereotypical part yet didn't act like "goth, yetI've met people who dress and act normal yet like gothic things or have a special creativity in that style.

Basically I think if you call yourself Goth you're trying to be diffeent than everyone else but by doing so pigeon hole yourself into a new stereotype whereas had you been yourself and not tried to put forth any image than you would have been unique, so I think the very existence of a "goth" crowd defeats the purpose.

So I say it doesn't exist. Kinda like if you ask one wiccan how he practices and compare that to another, it's just so different yet falls under the same banner.

So why even make a word to describe it?

I have no idea what the definition of a goth is. I know the kinds of people who are stereotypically refered to as goths, but I wouldn't be able to give you a definition.

offtopic: angel with the scabbed wings, nice name :p

I believe that a goth is someone who dresses in nothing but black, all the make up, eye shadow lipstick etc (Male and Female) and listens to proper heavy rock bands such as Dimmu Borgir.

I happen to like stuff like that, but i dont dress wearing all black or anything.

i can understand that, and i think it simply comes down to the fact that you don't know where they are coming from and why they choose to live life like they do. likewise, there would be a lot of people around who don't understand the way you live your life and its almost natural to become defensive or hate something you don't understand

you can't class yourself as 'goth'. Hell... you can't classify yourself as a smart person, either. Everybody is normal, it's just the other guy that puts on a label.

why are you all saying that they all just ware black, in fact no they don't. Look at the japaneese culture in japan the gothic chicks there wear like white weeding dresses torn up and same as some girls here where i live.

isnt goth just a different style? I mean there isnt just goths and "normal" people, you have punks, preps, 'gangstas' or whatever you want to call them if you want to catagorize yourselves, I am, myself.. I guess thats how I see it
