malebolgia Veteran Posted January 26, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 26, 2004 I typed in the usual update command in Gentoo Linux: emerge rsync, emerge -pu system (to see what's going to be updated), and finally emerge -u system. Well for the second time (Twice last Friday) my Gentoo box froze up during the update process. I have a good amount of updates to do, but every time I use emerge -u system and come back to my computer the next day it's always frozen? So what should I do to update my box? I'm thinking of trying to update it while not being in X, but I don't know if that will have any difference?
MrStaticVoid
Most people type emergy sync, emerge -pvDu world, emerge -Du world. Also make sure you have the latest version of portage installed and that your processor isn't overclocked. mmm...evangelion...
rezza Veteran Posted January 26, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 26, 2004 when it freezes, can you see what it was doing when it froze? ie does it always freeze when compiling the same app?
pagal
may be the drive is out of space? empty out /usr/portage/distfiles/ to get back some space.
malebolgia Veteran Posted January 26, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted January 26, 2004 This time I did it outside of KDE and it seems to be working fine. So tomorrow when I come back to work I'll let you guys know what happened.
pagal
oh, i just realized that it could be the terminal buffer problem...i read about it on gentoo forums. what terminal were you using?

malebolgia Veteran Posted January 27, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted January 27, 2004 Everything seemed to work out fine. Only thing now I have to do is update 4 config files in /etc. This is the step I always forget how to do right. I ran the command find /etc -iname '._cfg????_*' to see where the files are I needed to update: /etc/._cfg0000_updatedb.conf /etc/ssl/misc/._cfg0000_CA.pl /etc/ssl/._cfg0000_openssl.cnf /etc/cron.daily/._cfg0000_slocate There?s a way to update these files without having to editin/etc/make.globalsb>, but I forgot how to do it. Can anyone help me update these files correctly?
rezza Veteran Posted January 27, 2004 Veteran Share Posted January 27, 2004 those should be fairly safe to overwrite the older versions with the new. just run etc-update as root, and choose to replace them all. The times you have to be careful are when the files are ones which you've edited and are important for your system to run - eg make.conf, samba config files, etc etc.

malebolgia Veteran Posted February 3, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted February 3, 2004 Sorry to bug you guys again, but I'm still somewhat new to this updating thing on Gentoo. Today I remembered the command emerge -pu world. When I ran this I got a really big list of updates. My question is do I just run emerge -u world in order to get all the updates listed below (I'm thinking of doing it without starting up KDE)?
